Carbon reduction

We believe tourism should be educational and sustainable, as well as entertaining. We designed this trip to contribute minimal impact to the local environment with positive benefits to the local communities. All guides follow strict “green ethics”. Reusable water bottles are provided in an effort to encourage less waste and discourage the need for plastic throw-away bottles.

Our local tour operator was among the first in Costa Rica to receive the Certificate of Sustainable Tourism designation, awarded by the Costa Rican Tourism Board. This award is given to companies who consistently achieve or exceed their standards of environmental sustainability, business ethics and cultural sensitivity. They support conservation projects in Costa Rica ranging from rural development programs to sea turtle nest protection and community education programs. Their efforts have been recognized with an Ecotourism Excellence Award from Conservation International. Local personnel participated in a Sustainable Practices workshop given by Rainforest Alliance to learn how to minimize their carbon footprint.

All activities and excursions in Arenal, Monteverde and Tortuguero and Manuel Antonio national parks are ecologically responsible and low-impact, from wildlife spotting, natural history walks, hiking, canopy tours. All optional watersports in and near Manuel Antonio National Park are non-motorized and carbon-neutral: rafting, surfing, paddleboarding, sea kayaking. Guides always practice ‘Leave No Trace’ ethics and give clear and committed instructions for interacting with nature and wildlife with efforts to preserve and leave undisturbed the beauty for generations to enjoy.

Laguna Lodge in Tortuguero National Park, has a commitment with the environment and sustainable development with programs such as conserving energy and water, recycling, ecotourism training programs in topics such as sustainability.

For over 20 years, Greentique Hotels CEO and General Manager, Jim Damalas, has been commitment to protecting nature and developing responsible tourism. Since the late 1980s, Jim’s vision was to have a role in sustainable hospitality in Costa Rica, helping the country expand its efforts in Eco-tourism. His first tourism project in Costa Rica was to build Si Como No Resort Spa & Wildlife Refuge in Manuel Antonio, almost than 18 years ago. The design and operational vision for the hotel was to be a leader in green practices and economic sustainability for the local community. The mission was to integrate best green practices, including operations, community support and the creation of nature-based experiences owned and operated by the hotels that would engage and educate tourists, involving them in unique experiences that are an extension of the original Si Como No philosophy.

Their ground vehicles use biodegradable and renewable bio-diesel.

Sustainable tourism should improve the lives of local people. This ensures growth to the local economy and support to the community.

Hotels selected for this trip are small, locally-owned and share our environmental approach and beneficially involve the local people. They practice ethical business standards and are committed to environmental preservation. Si Como No engages the local communities by using local vendors for food and other supplies wherever possible, as well as having maintained the practice of hiring local people and helping them develop their skills via training and even outside education support. Also, they have created cultural tours in Manuel Antonio area, in addition to nature tours. These tours are integrated with the municipality, associations or organizations in the local areas, helping support different activities that promote the region, such as shows, sponsorships, and meetings in addition to supporting new housing projects, community centers and schools.
