Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Ancient Greece vacation, small group

Environment

We know that making the positive difference we aim to achieve will not be an easy task. However, our enthusiasm and commitment towards our travel responsibility mission is far stronger than any obstacles. We believe that in order to achieve any objective, the company has to have accurate policies and procedures for the employees and the guests to follow in order to reach our goal.

We have decided that the environment is a major component of any local community and any negative effect on the environment would directly have an impact on the lives of the inhabitants of the local community. Therefore, we have drawn up a strict environmental protection policy that all our employees and travelers have to abide by. For example, we recycle empty ink cartridges. A company collects them and disposes of them the correct manner. We’ve also moved towards a paperless booking process, where we encourage our travelers to download tour notes and vouchers onto their handheld devices instead of printing those out. For documents that require printing, we’ve kept them to a minimum of one page, such as our tour confirmation vouchers.
We no longer produce printed brochures. Not only does this reduce the usage of paper and ink, it also enables us to update our product line online which means our clients have direct access to latest information.

Ancient Ruins are found all over Greece. We encourage our travelers to take photos of these, but take nothing more than that. We also instruct our clients not to touch, sit or scrape at any ruins as these should be left in place for many generations to see.

It is the responsibility of all travelers to reduce waste and to not litter in any of the ancient sites and towns we visit. We operate a leave nothing but footprints policy and encourage our guests to keep waste to a minimum wherever we travel on this trip.

As we eat in locally owned restaurants and taverns on this trip, the produce is all sourced locally and has a much smaller carbon footprint because of this. It also tastes much better than imported ingredients too!

For us, Responsible Travel is the only way to travel.

Community

Throughout our long tourism business journey, exceeding 15 years of travel operation in the Middle East, we have succeeded in establishing strong links with the communities we are dealing with in the host destinations. By making use of the same suppliers and organizers, our travelers are bound to be exposed to the best tours and services during their travels with us.
We aim to inform and educate our travelers on the cultures of the destinations they are visiting. By doing this we aim to create a form of respect between the travelers and the local citizens who they will face along their tour

We believe that the Responsible Travel concept has to be a two-way strategy with both the travelers and the local community gaining benefits. We benefit the local communities we visit using a wide scope of activities that have a positive impact on the local economy, and by recruiting employees who belonging to the local community.

We encourage our guests to buy local products and make use of services that people local community offer. Local markets that have vendors and locals selling handicraft is the best way to support the craftsmen and the local economy. There are evil eyes, money pouches, scarves and ceramics to pick from during your shopping spree.

When leaving Athens behind, we will be making some lunch stops on some days. We like to use local, family owned restaurants where they still prepare the traditional Greek food that everyone desires to eat. From dolmades, mousaka, calamari and Greek salad served with delicious fresh feta and tomatoes bursting with flavour.

We further support the local community by employing local guides, using local handicraft shops and recommend shops to our travelers so that their vacation spending contributes to the people of that country. We also provide each traveler with a tipping guide. By doing this we set a concept of tipping and gratuity for every person who will offer a form of service to the traveler.

We have also considered the social aspect of the local community and how to respect the customs and traditions of the inhabitants helping us operate our tours. We always provide our guests with all the information needed to understand the community they are visiting and we create valuable opportunities for the travelers and the locals to mingle and exchange ideas and thoughts. During free time the travelers can walk about and eat at local places where locals will also be eating out for their evening meals. This makes for a perfect scene to speak to locals and perhaps even have a meal side by side.

We educate all our staff on the real life situations of each destination. Sales consultants will use this information to inform potential travelers of the correct information and threats that they may face. By creating long lasting relationships with our local ground handlers, we are able to establish what needs the community has and through their information we can inform our travelers what they can contribute to the local community from their home countries.

Greece is recovering from a major economical crisis. We encourage our travelers to buy from local shops, eat at street stalls and support the local people financially by tipping them for their services.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Visiting the ancient sites - too many to list individually

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

That it's a very 'full on' trip and busy throughout. I would definitely recommend adding an additional day in Athens at the end (as we did) to allow a visit to the National Archaeological Museum and other sites in Athens itself.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

We didn't realise until we got to Athens that the tour parts of the trip were 'subcontracted' to a local tour company. In our case, this worked very well (see below), but reading some other reviews on Trip Advisor, this did not seem to be everyone's experience.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Absolutely fabulous. We had a truly wonderful guide who put real enthusiasm into her presentations, was incredibly knowledgeable about all the sites and ancient Greek history and was able to answer every question asked.
