1 Reviews of Delphi & Meteora biking & hiking vacation in Greece

5 out of 5 stars

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

This is such a difficult question because the whole vacation was fantastic. Walking from Delphi down into the valley of the olive groves and hiking up to the monasteries of Meteora were both amazing experiences. The local guides that David engaged for these walks gave us so much insight into the area. Equally as memorable was our cycling in Pelion with Panos, our local guide there. He found so many hidden gems just off our main route that we would never have found alone. His love for the region was evident.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

We used David's initial itinerary as a base and requested some alternative activities which he included for us, no hassle. So let David know what interests you and he will try to work it into the itinerary. He says, it is your vacation.
Be prepared to get away from the bus loads of tourists and get to know Greece and its people.
Book now.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, David used local guides throughout the trip to make sure that we had the most knowledgeable people leading our walks and cycles. We certainly got to interact with many locals from small villages as we stayed in wonderful family run accommodation and dined in local family run tavernas.
A vacation where you walk and cycle for the majority of your time is certainly going to reduce environmental impact.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

This vacation introduced us to the real Greece. This was not a big bus tour and so we got to see things at our pace. David was great. He was well-organised, flexible and used quality guides and booked fantastic accommodation. Additionally, as we chatted as we travelled he listened to us and so was
able to include some additional things that he knew would interest us in particular.
I would love to go back to Greece and do more similar vacations with David.

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.

We depend on the sustainable natural beauty of the Pelion peninsula which draws visitors all year through its diversity of pristine mountain, forest & sea ecosystems along with its many small charming villages. Not exploited or used for mass tourism development, Pelion has remained untouched due to its ‘off the beaten track’ location, being at a distance from major airports & cities.

Our policy over the last 5 years has been to develop authentic activities reflecting these qualities and to do this we are helped by a network of trusted professional guides who are chosen not only by their service but also through their contribution in maintaining and working in harmony with the local environment. For example, ancient stone paths criss-crossing the small villages of Pelion were once the only communication routes in the area and fell into overgrowth & disuse with the advent of the car and road. Our walking & cycling guides which you may meet if you choose their activities, have initiated a program to open and maintain many of these which traverse much of the most beautiful scenery so that visitors now can enjoy them. In this way, all our trips maximize both the positive environmental impact and enjoyment.

Our base, a renovated traditional Pelion stone mansion with one meter thick stone walls is itself an ecologically friendly building and was designed to maintain a constant living temperature during Summer & Winter without need for air conditioning. Recently we invested in environmentally friendly systems for water and energy conservation such as heat on demand sinks in the kitchen area, a heat pump system for the general hot water use with a high energy efficiency negating the use of Petrol or Gas, and conversion of all our lighting to LED along with movement sensitive lighting in the most used areas.

Our focus is on the provision of an ‘Authentic experience’ which is rooted in ‘real Greece’ with all the best that has to offer. It is especially true in this respect that Community must go hand in hand with Environment. Although our base is a small traditional guest house, we nevertheless contribute strongly through employment and after ten years here we are integrated into the local village & area and are more than happy to share our local knowledge with guests on everything from festivals, food & trip planning, local markets & crafts in the area, to how to say good morning (Kalimera!) in Greek.

In renovating our stone house we specifically chose not to extend the original house with its 8 rooms because we felt we wanted to be able to get to know the guests, something not possible with a ‘mass tourism’ approach. Furthermore, the trips you will experience on your vacation directly support the excellent local guides we have selected whose contribution and positive impact on their community is proportionally very large.
