Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Southern India biking vacation

Environment

In many ways, South India is the ultimate sustainable destination – well, our trips surely are. On this trip, you will notice that our vehicles are serviced on time and have regular pollution checks to ensure we have minimum impact on the environment. You will find that we stay in small, locally owned hotels reflective of the local flavour, carefully handpicked to ensure you get the a real life experience.

Cycling is a great way to explore the local communities and, reduce carbon emissions as you ride along the coast beyond the crowds of northern India. This trip has a low impact form of transportation, unlike being a passenger in a car or bus would have on the environment, it's important to make sure you're being a responsible traveler to future generations to come. It's the little things that make such a big difference. It's our way of being respectful and not leaving a huge footprint behind.

Community

Something that sets this trip apart to make it truly special is one of our supported projects our own foundation supports – Pollinate.

Pollinate is an energy project that brings life-changing products to people who need them the most. People like Lakshmi, a 26 year old woman who has 4 children who all live in an 8 sq. metre tent with no access to energy until the support of Pollinate Energy was able to really give back. Women such as Lakshmi are generally the lowest income earners and, with little or no education, they struggle to find a job. Earlier in 2014, Lakshmi was offered the role of “Worker Bee” within Pollinate Energy. Now she talks to prospective customers in her community and works with Manjunath to sell lamps in her community – getting a small commission for each system installed. Her role as a Worker Bee has provided her the opportunity to earn an extra income while she continues to take care of her family at home. With the help and support of Pollinate, Lakshmi is now able to carry out different activities at night. She enjoys cooking roti (made of yoghurt and corn) and also practices sewing. On top of this, her children can study at nights. She has also seen a positive impact on her family’s health. Colds and coughs have reduced significantly. This is one of the many projects we support as a global tour operator, we want to show our support in giving back to local communities that provide us (and hopefully you) a life-changing travel experience.

Apart from supporting the local environment, we also encourage and use public transport wherever possible. We employ local staff, eat at family run restaurants to ensure the money stays within the community. Why wouldn’t you want a real local experience?

Gender equality is a huge issue in India. We always look to encourage females to re-enter or enter the workforce and are proud to say that recently, we’ve hired the highest number of female leaders to show our support to equality.
