Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Dominican Republic activity vacation

Our guides use the seven "Leave No Trace" principles while leading adventures. The 7 Leave No Trace principals are: 1) Plan ahead and be prepared 2) Travel and camp on durable surfaces 3) Dispose of waste properly 4) Leave what you find 5) Minimize campfire impacts 6) Respect wildlife 7) Be considerate of other visitors. We both practice and teach these skills to our guides and suppliers.

The accommodations we use have been carefully selected because of their environmental sustainability. The lodges, hotels, and farms all use either full or partial solar power, use rainwater collection, aquaponics, and keep a mindful eye on water consumption.

The restaurants we use practice farm to table methods, compost organic waste, and locally source food and beverage items.

We reduce our waste while on tour by using and providing guests reusable items.

We are committed to caring for the local environment for our adventure guests as well as adventurers of the future. The Dominican Republic is a developing country with an emerging waste disposal system. We encourage our guests to pack properly by leaving packaging waste at home, reusing rechargeable batteries, as bringing reusable items.

Our transportation, accommodations, meals, and adventures are locally owned. We feel for too much of Dominican tourism money is going to large multinational corporations and kept spent developing the Dominican economy.

Our adventure guides are local Dominican's that are hired for a fair living wage.
Throughout the year, we offer paid training courses relevant to the guides adventure. For example, our local canyoning guide as been certified by an internationally recognized canyoning association. His time during the course was paid. We also offer free wilderness first aid and CPR courses to our guides.

It is important that our guests get a feel for the Dominican Republic and her warm and friendly people. During their adventure vacation week, they will have lots of opportunities to interact with Dominicans. At our orientation on day one, we touch on cultural differences, fun and surprising facts, as well as some Spanish language with colloquialisms. We pride ourselves to be off the beaten path and showing the raw and natural beauty of the Dominican Republic.
