Responsible tourism: Argentina vacation, Patagonia to Iguazu falls

Environment

The hotels on the itinerary are small, locally-owned hotels with a low carbon footprint. For example, the Mine Hotel in Buenos Aires is one of the few eco-friendly hotels in the capital; implementing policies to reduce waste and energy and water use. Reuasable waste is donated to a local cooperative and used cooking oil is collected to be reused in the manufacturing of fuel. Club Tapiz uses ingredients and produce from the vineyard's farm and organic gardens in its restaurants, helping to reduce food miles.

La Aldea de la Selva operates a Sustainable Water and Energy Management Plan and is making an effort to manage its own waste. Organic waste is reused to produce compost which is then used as a fertiliser in the lodge's gardens. Any recyclables are sent to a local recycling cooperative. The hotel has also implemented a Biodiversity Conservation Plan to avoid disturbing local wildlife or damaging native flora. Finally, it gives priority to local residents when recruiting new staff.

Community

We promote small tours run by local suppliers and encourage our clients to get out of the hotel and explore as much as possible when they are traveling to ensure that money is reinvested in the local community. We also try not to overload our itineraries with pre-arranged activities to give clients more flexibility and allow them to engage with locally arranged trips and tours if they want to.

Before clients travel we provide them with a selection of local restaurants in each destination to encourage them to try local cuisine and eat outside of their hotel. We also provide our clients with a list of travel tips before they go, such as a few key words in each language and information on local culture and customs to encourage them to engage with local people; we are strong believers that a small effort on behalf of the traveler can make a big difference in the relationship between travelers and the local community and after all the people you meet are often what makes a trip to South America!
