Kayak or SUP vacation in Croatia

Carbon reduction

Your vacation will help support local people and conservation. We must also reduce CO2. Learn about the CO2 emissions of this vacation and how to reduce them.

Environment

ENVIRONMENTAL
Waste – zero impact on the environment. A local council on island Molat has a recycling system where all garbage from the islands is taken back to the mainland and recycled there. The person responsible for the garbage system meticulously keeps the island clean and all waste punctually removed.

Transport – 99% of the time we move using man-powered transportation. This includes kayaks, SUPs, bicycles and trekking. On this particular trip, we only use the van for a 20km drive on the island. The transfer is used to transfer the gear/passengers. We keep this transfer because it allows us to visit the islands north of our base. For the transfer we use van powered by a diesel engine that has a Euro 2 standard certificate.

Water – the island where we are based has no public water system. This means that all water is collected individually by each household from rainfall. Each house then filters the water and keeps it in underground tanks. Water is scarce in summer months when we can have up to 40 days without a drop of rain. All guests are kindly asked to be conscious of their water usage.

Wildlife – we are supporters and donators to Dolphin research center on island Molat, which is operated by association Val. The association is headed by a dolphin expert Martina Gomercic from Veterinary Faculty in Zagreb. Here students volunteer in the research center in the summer months. Their purpose is first to monitor pods of Dolphins that are resident in the Molat archipelago. Secondly, their aim is to spread the awareness about dolphins and other sea mammals in Croatia – all of which are endangered species. To do that, we have together developed a presentation about dolphins in Croatia, research projects and insights about the life of these great animals.

Suppliers – all of our suppliers prioritise organic supplies from local producers (seasonal vegetables, olive oil, fish, meat). Some of the supplies come from island Molat, nearby islands and villages behind Zadar.

Community

COMMUNITY
Neighbour – a big part of this particular itinerary is getting access to local families. You stay in family operated BnB that also serve your breakfast. All dinners are organised by local, family operated cooperatives. They do not function as restaurants but only prepare food for a limited number of guests per year. This way you get access to families and dinners which are not accessible to the general tourism travelers. Those families then serve the food from their gardens, fish they have caught or alternatively source it from their neighbours or other family cooperatives. In the last resort, they supply it from the mainland but again from a family operated businesses.

Campaigning for change – islands in the archipelago have chronically declining numbers of permanent residents. There is an opportunity to send a strong message to the young local population to start sustainable and environment-friendly businesses on islands and revive island economy and traditions. Doing this trip you are ‘walking the talk’ and proving that tourism can have a positive influence beyond the main streets of the most hyped places on the mainland. At the same time, we prove that tourism can support local culture and traditions like fishing, beekeeping, farming on the islands and more importantly. Most importantly it can make it in a sustainable that builds on the heritage and history and does note require large groups that overwhelm the local community and their way of living.

Traveling with respect – food is served by local families who take every effort to present their customs and give a very warm reception. This is embodied in a ritual of sharing a locally made rakija ( the spirit made of plums or grapes). You can feel this in every moment of your stay.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Kayaking through the submarine tunnels was incredible.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

There were some moments where we crossed open water on the kayaks that was a bit rough when the wind picked up, so would recomend building a bit of
fitness up before hand. The hike to the church ontop of the hill is also steep and I found this a bit hard work to climb in the heat.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Most of the traveling we did was either by walking, cycling or kayaking and this reduced environmental impacts. We would also buy things from the local
shops, supporting the community.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Overall, I would recomend this trip, it was a high activity vacation and got to meet some great people and the guide knew a lot about the area and made the
vacation very fun. At the time of writing this, we did have to provide our own lunches each day, where I would have paid a bit more to have this provided for us but a really great experience.

Read the operator's response here:

Thank you for your feedback. It is always great to hear people's impressions.
All of our trips are tailor made. The trip published on the RT is just a frame and can be tailor made. Some people opt for more SUP touring, others prefer all
dinners and all lunches. We are absolutely able to cater to all those needs. We do need to know about them upfront, though. :) All inclusions and exclusions
(no lunches) were clearly communicated upfront as has the list of things to bring to make this an epic adventure. We are always open to questions. If we don't
get a question, it's hard to give answers. :) Long live adventure!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

We have enjoyed every aspect hugely. Food with local people both delicious and a privilege; the apartment was perfect; the island beautiful and seakayaking was awesome - all we could have hoped for. Our guide, Mike, made every trip
fun for all four of us - knowledgeable, experienced, caring and fun. It's all been an incredible week.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Go ready to work at paddling - the joys to find in coves and islands are reward for a bit of effort getting there.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

We definitely felt the way the operator arranged their guided trips supported
the wider local community - a local apartment, breakfast and evening meals with local families, a focus on minimal impact when exploring the islands by kayak. Tourism done the right way is now a critical source of income for the island.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Awesome. We were a family with two teenage boys. We like being active but we're not experienced sea kayakers.
