Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Activity and yoga vacation in Croatia

Waste – zero impact on the environment. The local council on island Molat has a recycling system where all garbage from the islands is taken back to the mainland and recycled there. Mirko, who is responsible for the garbage system meticulously keeps the island clean and all waste punctually removed.

Transport – 95% of the time we move using man-powered transportation. This includes kayaks, SUPs, bicycles and trekking. On this particular trip, we only use the van for a 20km drive on the island. The transfer is used to transfer the gear/passengers. We keep this transfer because it allows us to visit the islands north of our base. For the transfer, we use van powered by a diesel engine that has a Euro 2 standard certificate.

Water – the island where we are based has no public water system. This means that all water is collected individually by each household from rainfall. Each house then filters the water and keeps it in underground tanks. Water is scarce in summer months when we can have up to 40 days without a drop of rain. All guests are kindly asked to be conscious of their water usage.

Wildlife – we are supporters and donators to Dolphin research centre on island Molat, which is operated by association Val. The association is headed by a well-known dolphin expert Martina Gomercic from Veterinary Faculty in Zagreb. Here students volunteer in the research centre in the summer months. Their purpose is first to monitor pods of Dolphins that are residents in the Molat archipelago. Secondly, their aim is to spread the awareness about dolphins and other sea mammals in Croatia – all of which are endangered species. To do that, we have together developed a presentation about dolphins in Croatia, research projects and insights about the life of these great animals.

Suppliers – all of our suppliers prioritise organic supplies from local producers (seasonal vegetables, olive oil, fish, meat). Some of the supplies come from island Molat, nearby islands and villages behind Zadar.

Neighbour – a big part of this particular itinerary is getting access to local families. You stay in family operated BnB that also serve your breakfast. All dinners are organised by local, family operated cooperatives. They do not function as restaurants but only prepare food for a limited number of guests per year. This way you get access to families and dinners which are not accessible to the general tourism travelers. Those families then serve the food from their gardens, fish they have caught or alternatively source it from their neighbours or other family cooperatives. In the last resort, they supply it from the mainland but again from a family operated businesses.

Campaigning for change – islands in the archipelago have a chronically declining number of residents. There is an opportunity to send a strong message to the young local population to start businesses on islands and revive island economy. Doing this trip you are ‘walking the talk’ and proving that tourism can have a positive influence beyond the main streets of the most hyped places on the mainland. At the same time, we prove that tourism can support local culture and traditions like fishing, beekeeping, farming on the islands and more importantly. Most importantly it can make it in a sustainable that builds on the heritage and history and does note require large groups that overwhelm the local community and their way of living.

Traveling with respect – food is served by local families who take every effort to present their customs and give a very warm reception. This is embodied in a ritual of sharing a locally made rakija (a spirit made of plums or grapes). You can feel this in every moment of your stay.
