Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Luxury Tanzania and Zanzibar vacation

The camps that we have selected for the itinerary are all small and intimate properties that aim to give back as much as they take. As a tour operator, we recommend camps and properties which operate responsibly to ensure that tourism has a positive impact on the care of the land and the people.

The Plantation Lodge is a small property that sits in lush, tropical gardens in the grounds of what used to be a coffee plantation. The gardens are not merely a flowering backdrop, but they are put to practical use, providing a home for fruit trees which are used daily in the menu served.

We believe that sending guests to a mobile tented camp in the Serengeti is much more environmentally friendly than a permanent tent for several reasons. Mobile camps pack up everything two or three times a year and move to a new location and in doing so, they allow the grass and surrounding flora to replenish. Sanctuary Migration Camp, each season, is rebuilt in a such a manner that they blend seamlessly with the environment. The camp is committed to be as unnoticed as possible so it does not disturb the resident wildlife.

During all of the safaris, we aim to keep our impact on the wildlife as low as possible. We ensure that a good distance is kept between the animals and the vehicles, and that there are a limited number of safari vehicles in each location. Whilst this is sometimes difficult in busy areas of the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater, our guides will only stay at a game sighting for a respectful amount of time before moving on and allowing the maximum amount of space for the animals.

In Zanzibar, Matemwe Lodge was designed to be eco-friendly and was built using local wood and stone. Solar panels generate the electricity across the lodge, as well as heating the showers in the rooms. The bungalows receive a sea-breeze off the Indian Ocean and so the lodge does not need, or have air conditioning. Matemwe Lodge is also very passionate about Sea Turtle conservation, and for a number of years, the lodge has successfully rescued nests from very risky sites.

These nests are relocated to a safe nesting area on Matemwe’s own beach, where they can be monitored right up until the turtles enter the sea, thus giving the turtle hatchlings the best chance of survival. On the occasion that the hatchlings are too small, weak or malformed to be released immediately, they are taken to Mnarani Turtle Centre in Nungwi, who do a great job of caring for and hand rearing the babies, until they are ready for release.

For the first part of the safari, which is on a private basis, we use a local Tanzanian safari company. The local guides, over twenty years, have gained a reputation of running a knowledgeable and reliable operation and the guides are all local to northern Tanzania and are treated with respect and equality.

Sat in the heart of the Ngorongoro Highlands, the location of Plantation Lodge is the perfect base for activities that benefit local communities and people. For example, a visit to a Masai village means that the local community can advantage from the tourism, and the tourists can become more educated in alternative beliefs and cultures. This helps to create good relationships between tourists and the local community.

On Zanzibar island, your stay in Jafferji House in Stonetown is a great hotel to stay in if you want to see some of the local happenings and work behind the scenes. The hotel offer a half day tour, where a guide will accompany you to a rural village where you will have a real insight into the people and life on Zanzibar, witnessing daily activities being undertaken – women weaving baskets, grinding millet, and cooking local dishes, using traditional methods. Watch as they decorate themselves with the traditional henna body painting, and braid hair.

We believe that doing local cultural tours in Zanzibar are perfect for guests looking for organic culture, and in doing so, they are supporting sustainable tourism and looking after the people of Zanzibar.
