Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Highlights of Burma vacation

Environment

Our tours are conducted in very small groups (usually two people or family groups) which allows our travelers to take the journey at their own pace and with less impact on their surroundings than large tour groups. This is particularly poignant somewhere like Myanmar where tourism was previously severely restricted. Our itineraries are also completely tailor made so we are able to adjust the schedule and journey the path less travelled.

We work with a 100% locally owned supplier in Myanmar for our tours. The guides working for this supplier are under strict guidelines from the local authority of history and architecture and they carefully obey these rules when visiting heritage sites. In Myanmar, visitors will pay an entrance fee at most places which supports restoration projects and also sustainable projects such as at Inle Lake.

Elephant riding in Asia is something we are completely against therefore we do not include this activity in our Myanmar itinerary.

This itinerary does include internal flights due to the nature of the country but other journeys are done by road. All of our vehicles are checked for their safety standards and equipped with waste disposal facilities.

Respecting the local environment also applies to our offices in the UK and Australia – we take a number of sustainability measures like trying to be as paperless as possible and having a staff bike scheme to encourage employees to cycle to work.

Community

Buddhist spirituality is at the centre of Myanmar life and this is illustrated by the incredible structures you will see and the atmosphere you will feel everywhere you go. Your local tour leader will be in an invaluable source of information during your time in this beautiful country, guiding you through the local customs and sharing knowledge. When you first meet your guide, they will give you an introduction to Myanmar history, customs, beliefs and the day to day life of local people. As mentioned, tourism in Myanmar has only fairly recently begun to boom so it is vital to travel with respect and listen to your guide. Not only does employing guides (and drivers) from Myanmar create work opportunities, it also ensures that you get the best experience possible from someone who really knows and cares about their country. Our guests will stay mostly in locally owned accommodations which are committed to employing local young people and providing them with proper career training.

We want to promote authentic travel, for you to get a real impression of Myanmar. We don’t do set shopping stops as these are often a tourist trip but instead can schedule a visit to villages and remote areas to purchase local crafts. We also want you to get a true taste of Myanmar – this is why we encourage you to speak to your guide about what they recommend for evening dining options rather than going to the usual tourist restaurants. Behind the scenes, we also support a local deaf youth society which is involved in projects like Myanmar Deaf Chef - an initiative which helps young deaf chefs express their unspoken talents and get employment in top restaurants and hotels.
