Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Rural Cyprus self-guided hiking vacation

Environment

Our self-guided walking trip through scenic north west Cyprus uses gravel forest trails and often deserted, part-unmade backroads only accessible to farm vehicles, allowing the preservation of flora, fauna and wildlife. Guests are encouraged to act responsibly and to leave no litter behind them.

The Cyprus Moufflon, a wild sheep indigenous to the island, is a site to behold if you are lucky enough to see one in the forest areas, especially a male sporting a majestic set of horns, giving the appearance more akin to an Ibex. Formerly endangered, the Moufflon is now protected, even though local hunters have been known to shoot them. There are between 2500-3000 Moufflon roaming the Paphos forest region usually in groups of 4-5 at a time, so if you hear a rustling in the trees, stay quiet and you may see some Moufflon close by.

Water is a precious commodity as Cyprus prefers to rely on environmentally natural rainfall for its water needs rather than use the desalination units across the island. We encourage guests to save water wherever possible, to recycle anything they can and we provide refillable water bottles to eliminate plastic waste.

All communication is done electronically via e-mail or Skype eliminating the need for paper and we laminate all route guide notes that accompany the GPS units for multiple re-use.

Community

Accommodation is in small family run hotels that are grateful for our support during "low season" months (October to end May), the perfect time for walking when the weather is cooler. All food is sourced locally and we encourage guests to use village tavernas to sample traditional home-cooked food served by family members (including the children) rather than coastal tourist restaurants, often staffed by foreigners.

We work with local partners to offer optional extra activities if required, including horse riding, watersports, a rejuvenating yoga or meditation class or even a massage. Businesses offering a personal service like ourselves survive by working together as a community and we are proud to be part of that local community which is what makes Cyprus such a unique country to live in.

Our route guide information cards offer suggestions on where to stop for lunch, whether it be a coffee shop or village taverna, as well as optional purchases to be made such as good quality wine from a local winery or perhaps a traditional souvenir such as a lace or leather item. We only recommend places and items we visit or have bought ourselves, helping to support the local community.
