Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Canyoning and trekking in the Sierra Nevada, Spain

Environment

We always relate tourism in Southern Spain with a sun-and-beach destination, with a mass tourism that looks more for sun and fun than for a way to explore the region's nature and its people in a sustainable way. For us it's not only the coast but also its mountains, this adventure tour takes you through some of the most impressive and interesting landscapes which unfortunately struggle to develop in opposition with the luxury resort sites near other beaches.

Our commitment is to encourage people to discover this side of Andalusia at the time we enjoy activities such as canyoning and trekking passing through some of the most beautiful and typical Andalusian villages, which have not been settled with loads of touristic apartments and continue keeping the essence and costumes of the region.

We try to avoid as much as possible the road transportation and include hiking routes to connect between different points and villages, discovering then the environment and gaining first-hand knowledge of the rural life in the Alpujarras and Sierra Nevada.

Along the way, we encourage always our travelers to drink fresh and safe water from the natural sources that we find across the National Park of Sierra Nevada, but it is important that each person take always a bottle of water with them as well to avoid dehydratation.

Furthermore on our impact on the local environment, you will receive guidance from your tour leader in order to reduce this as much as possible. Usually there're a couple of sensitive places the you will pass by, Río Verde, where we will do canyoning, and the trek between Capileira and Trevélez across the Sierra Nevada National Park, in which you will need to pay especial attention and follow the guidelines of your tour leader. For example waste collection and management is absolutely essential in this tour. You won't have access to waste bins in many parts of the tour and will be advised to take with you everything. Organic waste will be collected and deposit in some parts of the trip.

All our partners in Andalusia are part of the Europarc Federation, which means they are officially certified in the conservation and sustainable development of the area's biodiversity.

Community

Our main contribution to the community is to connect profoundly with the rural life and rural communities of Andalusia, leaving aside the mass tourism accommodations by staying in small family-owned hotels and visiting small towns of the Alpujarras, like Trevélez and Capileira, and the Natural Park of Sierra Nevada.

For instance, it's worth mentioning our stay in this tour in a local "cortijo", a type of house that is being gradually lost and in lack of use. Our small contribution in this tour by staying in this one helps in preserving the cortijo and maintaining it in good state.

In all our tours we work together with local people, sharing with them good working conditions and collaborating in this way to improve the economy of the place we visit. Apart from that, we think that working with local people is the best way to show our travelers the real local customs. That's why we also try to recommend always local restaurants to our customers and we send them some tips before the trip where we recommend local products and food, collaborating indirectly to improve the local economy as well.

All our instructors and partners in Andalusia share our concerns on the needs to re-establish the identity of this area and bring and develop gradually a more sustainable type of tourism. And we collaborate with them bringing travelers closer to the roots of Andalusian, showing them that Andalusia is more than just sun and fun and contributing to promote this type of sustainable tourism.
