Responsible tourism: Husky farm vacation and the Northern Lights

Environment

Birk Husky Farm blends in seamlessly with its natural environment. Hostess Trine is passionate about her surrounding wilderness and keeping it pristine for guests and future generations. All the basics are covered including recycling, low impact buildings, and low energy use. In addition, wildlife is a real passion for Trine. She has established many bird feeders on her land and consequently gets visitors of the bird variety from all around the world including Siberian tits, bullfinches and more. Trine has established several bird hides so guests can enjoy viewing the birdlife. Some of the cabins are totally off grid and therefore energy neutral and the sauna is wood-fired using wood from nearby sustainable sources. Trine is also passionate about using ingredients from the Varanger region in the food served to guests including fish, berries, and meat. Trine runs the dog-sledding tours carefully, mindful of the local environment and fragile fauna. Groups are kept small with a maximum of eight guests.

Community

Birk Husky's community includes a kennel of 40 husky dogs. They are animals that are well loved and cared for. They work hard but are treated with kindness and respect. They are not over-worked and are given a 'dog day spa' once per week to rest up and be pampered by guests. Both guests and animals enjoy Mondays during the winter! The husky farm supports local food suppliers by sourcing ingredients locally and providing employment for guides. Trine also supports cultural awareness of the local Sami culture and heritage which is embedded into life on the husky farm. Her family is keen to share this with guests to support and promote the local Sami culture in a positive and meaningful way. The husky farm also sells handmade crafts from local craftspeople to support their work and share cultural artefacts with guests in the shop which include handmade mugs, soaps and jewellery.
