Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: South Africa hiking vacation on the Sunshine Coast

On our walks, we find a lot of debris washed on the shores and we encourage our guests to take one piece of rubbish along with them each day and dispose of it upon reaching our destination. We also look to pick up all fishing line left on the beaches or which has been washed up and disposed in the reciprocals which are placed at all the swimming beaches. In addition we act as custodians for our beaches and marine life and very often young seals, penguins and birds are often spotted exhausted on the beach which we report to the SPCA with pinned markers so that they can capture the animals and transfer them to the Port Elizabeth aquarium for rehabilitation and release. This can even go so far as assisting whales and/or dolphins which have beached to return to the water or reporting these incidents to the authorities for assistance.

We visit the Woody Cape section of the Addo Elephant National Park and pay entrance fees for such, and in so doing help to conserve this extremely sensitive and important protected area.

South Africa is an extremely water scarce country and very recently is in the grips of a 30 year drought. we only utilize rain water for our drinking water and make use of re-usable water containers throughout our trips, urging guests to re-use their containers and filling up at the designated rain-water points, without buying bottled water and limiting the amount of plastic rubbish from disposed water bottles.

All the accommodation establishments that we stay at burn exotic problem plants wood such as Eucalyptus and Black wattle, for heating and cooking so we assist in problem plant eradication as well as not over utilize our natural indigenous flora.

A fair deal:

We only employ locally qualified guides and give very good working conditions as well as only using accommodation which employs locals so in this way we are bringing a lot of revenue to a very under-utilized region of South Africa in terms of tourism and bringing with them a sustainable means of uplifting the local communities. We only utilize locally owned and run accommodation and restaurants who have fair practice with their local employees as well as locally produced products for the meals provided.

Traveling with respect:
We work to educate tourists of the local traditions and culture and encourage guests to converse with and get a feeling for different traditions and cultures and in this particular region it is the Xhosa people who have a proud history and culture, we look to have all our guests greeting the locals in their own language and in this way begin conversations...which is what traveling is all about!
