Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Maiori to Positano Amalfi Coast walking vacation

Environment

Walking is the least carbon intensive way to travel, keeping the environmental impact of our vacations to a minimum. Where it is necessary to travel by means other than on foot, we use public transport wherever possible. We aim to balance the environmental impact of traveling with the benefits sustainable tourism can bring to local economies. We therefore focus the main part of our walks on the Amalfi Coast in areas that are as much as possible ‘off the beaten track’, providing our clients with authentic experiences far removed from mass tourism. We use small family-owned hotels which have often been in the ownership of the same family for generations, employing staff from the local community.

In our small office we recycle paper, cardboard, ink cartridges and printed material to reduce the waste in landfill sites. We purchase recycled printer cartridges, paper, envelopes, labels, pens, toilet tissue, bin liners. We turn off printers, photocopiers, computers, battery chargers and transformers at the end of each day and avoid ‘screen savers’, use energy-efficient bulbs and low-energy appliances. We cut CO2 emissions by maintaining heating thermostats at the lowest comfortable setting. We do not use tumble dryers nor take disposable plastic bottles to the countryside, instead promoting the use of water bottles manufactured by companies like Sigg.

We do not print brochures, keeping customers informed electronically via email, electronic newsletters and our website. We encourage clients to remit their payments electronically via PayPal, WorldPay or by bank transfer.

Community

We support local projects, craftsmen and artisans; for example, on our Amalfi Coast walking vacations, we promote visits to a local paper mill involved in the traditional manufacture of high-quality paper. Visitors often buy the paper as gifts or souvenirs. We recommend local liqueurs, such as Limoncello, grown from local lemons and important to Amalfi’s economy. We also arrange optional visits to private, local establishments to learn about the all-important growing and harvesting of the lemons. Local cookery lessons are also available, again bringing extra income to local families. We recommend local restaurants for dinners and lunches, establishments preparing their menus from locally grown produce purchased from local farming families who have worked the land for centuries. When packed lunches are required, we recommend local bakeries, delicatessens and fruiterers for supplies.

We recommend public transport for airport transfers, supplying appropriate timetables. We also recommend taking the bus for local journeys and local boat operators for trips to Capri and Positano. We liaise with local tourist offices and recommend knowledgeable local guides as required to ensure our clients benefit from specialist local knowledge. We provide our clients with comprehensive commentaries to enhance their understanding and knowledge of the land through which they are walking. We believe that we have made valuable economic contributions to local rural businesses, bringing them repeat business, and it is our aim to continue to do so.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

The villages early on are very nice. Particularly Maiori and Minori, both felt untouristy unlike some of the later villages. I loved exploring all of the little lanes and still seeing normal life being lived.

Watching the Easter celebrations during the week. A lot of the culture is exotic by Northern European standards.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Leave early for the walk of the gods. We were up there around midday and it was very busy.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Not particularly. At least two of our hotels changed our towels during our stay - even though we only stayed one night. Public transport was well promoted.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

I really enjoyed the vacation, however, I'm not sure if I benefited from using an agency for this walking vacation. A lot of the information I was given was either wrong or confusing. I use an agency to make my vacation simpler - I have organised plenty of vacations (walking and otherwise) in the past on my own. I expect to just turn up on an agency vacation, follow my instructions and have an easy trip.

It felt like the cost of the vacation only really covered the hotels and breakfast. We still had to do lots of the planning and route solving ourselves on the trip.

The vacation was great, but just not great value for money!

Read the operator's response here:

Dear James,

Thank you for your comments. With regard to the hotels having changed your towels, since you stayed just for one night in each hotel, we cannot see how this could be avoided.

The problem with one route was unavoidable due to a landslide about which you were notified with alternative suggestions from our local guide. We tailored this vacation to suit your budget and our notes and cultural commentaries have been highly valued by our clients. You mentioned how you particularly you enjoyed the villages of Maiori and Minori, both being off the beaten track and not usually included in walking vacations. We are pleased to know you enjoyed your vacation on the spectacular Amalfi Coast. Best wishes, June
