Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your vacation will help support conservation and local people.

We encourage travelers to save paper – try to gather as much information possible online and print trip information sparingly. We do not require them to show a printed voucher of any kind.

Snowshoeing is one of the most ancient forms of transportation with no environmental impact. With fresh snowfall, no trace will be left of your passage. Your guide will provide you with general guidelines, involving staying on trails, gathering your waste in your backpack and avalanche safety. Our guides and groups will never leave litter behind and are cautious about the impact their presence has on the ecosystems of the Rila and Pirin mountains.

In terms of transportation, thinking about the reducing the carbon emissions during your travel, starts at home. While in Bulgaria, we always use vehicles with low carbon emissions, your vehicle will be no exception. You will use motorized vehicles only to reach the stating point of the snowshoeing route for the day and the accommodation at the end of the day during your snowshoeing vacation.

All our guides demonstrate environmentally protecting behavior and are inducing such behavior as a standard for the whole group. When shopping or ordering day packs for the groups, we make sure we minimize the packaging and focus on recyclable materials. We encourage energy and water saving while in the accommodation. Always turn off your lights and heating when you leave the room. Minimize the time and water you spend in the shower.

The family-run pensions we work with in Govedartsi are environmentally cautious, partially using solar energy. Towels are not changed every day, but once every three days. All food you consume in the pension is made with local products. Breakfast food, such as jams, honey, cheese, are not served in plastic packages.

The Impacts of this Trip

We believe that we will achieve our aims far more effectively if we involve local people and organizations wherever possible.

This is why your accommodations in Bansko and Govedartsi are locally owned. Whenever we need to use a transport service to reach the starting point of our route, we employ a member of the local community.

We strive to recruit local people in both office and field positions wherever possible. These members of staff are trained by us and receive the same remuneration as “foreigners” doing the same job.

Although generally more basic, homestays provide an invaluable insight into the local lifestyle. The staff and family members in Govedartsi are all locals, very friendly and willing to share their hospitality and culture with their guests.

We endeavor to work with enterprises that treat both the traveler and the local community in a fair and just manner. By recruiting locals, we always try not only to capitalize the natural and cultural assets of an area but also to build their pride of what they can offer as a unique product.

We always aim to employ local guides, originating from the Pirin or Rila mountainous regions. They best act as an example of how to behave and what is appropriate. They will inform you about what the locals are sensitive to and how to respect their wealth of traditions.

2 Reviews of Bulgaria snowshoeing vacation

4 out of 5 stars

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Snowshoeing in beautiful sunshine and fresh but crisp snow! Fabulous views across from one mountain range to the next. Whilst we did visit the two most
commonly known resorts - Bansko and Borovets we also visited smaller resorts which really were only used by Bulgarians - so much less busy and it felt, a
more authentic experience.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

You need to be fit - so for example walking up 600m of height gain is significantly easier than snowshoeing, especially if the snow is deep and soft. But our guide, Stamen, was good at allowing everyone to move at their own pace. Bring a lot of layers, as the temperature can change significantly during the day, or from day to day. Be flexible, one day the gondola was not working, so we had to change our route to accommodate this.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Our vacation definitely benefited local people, we used locally owned hotels and restaurants/cafes. Our guide was Bulgarian. One evening we visited a local
village to experience rural tourism.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Exceptionally good value for money

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

I enjoyed visiting the mountains and countryside of Bulgaria with a guide. A trip to a Cultural center for dinner and entertainment on the same day as a trip to
Local Outdoor springs was certainly memorable.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

This adventure in the mountains requires a high level of fitness as in order to enjoy it you must keep up with the guide and the pace is fast. I have been on 2
snowshoeing vacations before and didn't expect the daily distance and ascent to be completed at a brisk pace. I was under constant pressure, my friends
however who are of very high fitness loved the challenge and every minute of the daily ascents and descents.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes we visited many local shops, cafes and cultural places, group travel using local family hotels supports local people, the cultural center we visited supports
the conservation of local customs and traditions.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

I'd have to say the daily pressure on the mountains took from my enjoyment, so 3/5 for the activity portion , I'd rate all other services 5/5.

Dear Una,

Thank you again for booking a snowshoeing tour with us. Customer satisfaction is our top priority. We are sorry to read that the tour difficulty has not been up to your physical fitness. People have different perceptions of what is easy, difficult or challenging. That is why, instead of joggling with these terms, we have put the hiking specifics on each day (incl. hiking time only without breaks, elevation gain in vertical meters etc.). This should give a very clear idea about the tour difficulty to every potential customer, so he/she can better decide if the level is suited for his/her abilities. No two snow shoeing treks are alike. Although we appreciate the fact that you have taken part in other snowshoeing tours before, mind that ours by no means is rated as easy or even moderate. We are fully aware that wrong misinterpretation of these hiking specifics can make a whole tour unpleasant to say the least, but this is not something we see as our fault, as long as we have provided all the necessary information in advance. It will be fair to mention that we already got three 5-
star glorious reviews on TripAdvisor by other customers booked on the same tour. I still hope that despite the fact that you skipped some of the walks, you still enjoyed the rest of your vacation and the services we got through our company and our guide.
