Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your vacation will help support conservation and local people.

• We travel only short distances by minibus on this Retreat and quite a lot of the photography takes place on the Estate itself.

• When we’re in the field, we take routes that minimise disturbance to natural vegetation and wildlife. If we suspect that we have stopped near a nest to eat or photograph, we move the group on.

• All the meals are produced in-house and when possible, we use organic, local produce, source from the Estate and others in the area. Shopping in markets helps to reduce the amount of unnecessary packaging.

• Our local déchetterie provides the opportunity to recycle most things so any waste we generate goes there. Guests are also asked to sort their own waste in preparation for recycling, which focuses attention on their footprint.

• The accommodation we use is a beautifully renovated barn adjacent to the Estate’s Château and the Estate’s owners actively manage it to benefit wildlife.

The Impacts of this Trip

We use local produce whenever available; being Burgundy, there is a great selection, including wines, beef, wild boar, a variety of cheeses and honey cake. Organic vegetables come from the market in Autun.

• We prefer to shop at markets and support local traders rather than national supermarkets and all our bread is supplied through the local dépot de pain.

• We respect local cultural sensitivities (for example, around the period of the Occupation), acknowledge that we are guests and conduct ourselves accordingly.

• We use locally-owned cafés, particularly those in out of the way locations, when working out in the field and encourage interchange between clients and patron.

• When we photograph someone, we exchange contact details and ensure that they are supplied with copies of their images, digitally.

• We encourage local naturalists to accompany us on some of our day trips; it sometimes takes foreigners showing an interest to open the eyes of local people to the treasures they live amongst.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

The food. Charlotte is amazing! And by the way, the photography instruction and discussion was good too, Niall! One day I was last to arrive at the car. Someone made some slightly negative remark, to which Niall smiled at me, shook his head slightly at the remark and said, "We feed them into submission." He appreciated the power of Charlotte's wonderful food. Any request related to issues with food was always listened to seriously and taken note of. Things weren't just left out. A proper alternative was always available.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Be prepared for a lovely week! Leave a little extra space in your luggage to take home a print of your work from the week. Also, the local market has some lovely things, and not just the food! (And fresh muscatels!!!)

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Care was taken to buy locally, use wisely, minimise waste and sort and deal with rubbish properly. Reusable water containers were provided, and those of us who had brought our own travel mugs for tea/coffee were supported and encouraged.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Really good. It was specially nice to sleep in the same bed each night and not to have to be constantly packing up and moving on. A nice bunch of people with a common interest in a lovely place with stunning food.
