Responsible tourism: Spitsbergen sailing expedition

Environment

Wildlife:
Meeting wildlife when traveling to Spitsbergen is one of the highlights of such a trip. We might meet whales, hatching birds, walruses, polar foxes or the polarbear on our trip. The polarbear is not only a dangerous predator, but also vulnerable and illegal to hunt. We follow the philosophy that we as humans are visitors to the Arctic, this is the land of wildlife and nature and we adjust to them instead of the other way around. That means that we take our precautions and travel with respect, we do not disturb wildlife unneccessary.
Transport:
Traveling by sailing vessel is an environmental way of exploring and experiencing the nature. Not only is it an experience for our guests, enjoying the silence with only the winds taking us further, but also to reduce the use of engine power. We use engine power only when neccessary and keep it to a minimum.

Community

A fair deal:
We employ staff with the aim to avoid short-term contracts and season work. Seaons in Spitsbergen are very different with different level of activity. Over the past years we have more staff in fixed, long-term contracts, for a more sustainable company and destination. Our guides have annual training and education to ensure quality, motivation and safety for the guests. Glaciers in particular is important on this trip, the glaciers change every year and good knowledge is therefore a must. We educate our guides and hosts with this in mind. The company also have possibility for staff to apply for education support paid from the company.

Environmental policy: As a guest on this trip you contribute to treeplanting in Kenya, Africa. By planting trees, you will reduce the carbon foot print of your air travel as well as your motorized transport on the archipelago. Since the project was established in 2000 we have planted 75.000 trees, with the aim to revive the Talek river ecosystem in Kenya.
In addition, our ecological destinations use as little resources as possible and use ecological products, to make your carbon footprint even smaller. The company is Eco Lighthouse certified, which means a great focus on ecological alternatives, along with an awareness of resources spent. Spitsbergen is also certified as a sustainable destination.
