Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.

Planet

On this tour, we'll visit a celebrated heritage center dedicated to the San people of South Africa. !Khwa ttu opened to the public in 2006. In the following decade, inside the now restored farm buildings, it steadily developed its tourism offering and San development capabilities. Outside, the land was carefully rehabilitated and wildlife reintroduced.

Situated in the Cape Floral Kingdom, itself a UNESCO World Heritage site, !Khwa ttu embraces and champions a range of environmental stewardship programmes.

We'll support a local farmers market where food is sustainably grown and sourced from local small businesses and wine estates.

As a Culinary Tour showcasing the developing South Africa food scene, we welcome vegetarians and vegans and will not only accommodate dietary requirements, it serves as an exciting challenge for the chefs we meet en-route to create an equally delicious sustainable meat free option.

The first restaurant we'll enjoy hates seeing good food go to waste. That’s why instead of throwing what’s left unused at the end of the night, they donate all excess food to the Napier Street Shelter in Cape Town. The shelter provides a haven for up to 96 people every night, accommodating 63 male and 33 females and GOLD’s meals go to feeding hot lunches every single day.

Our Cape Town Hotel runs a registered NPO and is partnering with Nutriwell to help contribute to the alleviation of poverty in underprivileged communities, by distributing food in the most cost effective way possible.

Legacy is contributing 7500 individual, nutritionally balanced meals per day, which consist of a thick vegetable soup, soya stew mince, instant porridge and an instant beverage shake. Our target, with your assistance, is to achieve 15 000 meals per day, for the next 3 months.

People

We partner with ZABRA, a UK initiatie that collects and distributes pre-owned bras to communities in Southern Africa. Guests on this tour will be invited to be 'Cup Bearers', enabling critical transport of bras directly into the hands of the communities that need them most.

In September 2016 Ubuntu committed a substantial portion of the funding needed to build !Khwa ttu’s San Heritage Centre. This paved the way to fulfilling the dreams of many, and launched the next exciting stage of !Khwa ttu’s development.

The tour involves a visit to a local township, which will emply a local resident and support local initiatives in the commuity. Also by embarking on a walking tour of Cape Town, we'll visit many small local businesses, supporting them by purchasing their snacks to fuel our day.

In Paternoster, we'll dine with the locals at a beachside braai - suporting local fishermen where the catch comes directly from the sea to the fire.
