Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Sikkim cycling tour, India

Environment

Our Eastern Himalayan tour does not allow us to indulge in any activities that involve animals. Each guest will be handed over a document of do's and dont's at the beginning of the tour which will have guidelines on how to travel responsibly and being sensitive to the environment we live in.

Sikkim is the first state in India to turn completely organic. On the day we cycle out to Rumtek, we stay at a homestay in place called Teen Taley. The family that runs this homestay have a cow shed and the manure from cow is used to grow vegetables and fruits which will be used to prepare food for the guests staying at their homestay. The bio-degradable waste generated on the tour by the group is also disposed off here to make compost in that garden.

As a rule, we are a strict NO to bottled water and all our guests are informed of this prior to the start of the tour. We insist that the guests carry their own water bottles which will be refilled by us with clean and hygienic RO purified drinking water.

This is a cycling tour, thereby keeping our guests transport emission low. We use only one support vehicle to reduce the carbon footprint. All guests will cycle from point A to point B and the support vehicle will have designated stop points to support the cyclists and load up if required.

Community

A key highlight on this tour are our local homestay / farm-stay accommodations and the conversations that you strike with the family will make to the best memories that you will take back.

On our Sikkim tour, we hire a local native sherpa community guide who has been trained by us to share all the local knowledge to our guests. This way we are not only getting authentic experience of the region, but also paying them a fair guide charge to support the local community.

We also visit the Institute of Tibetology where our local guide will walk you through the rich history of Tibetan studies, Buddhism, traditional art and detail the 11th and 12th Century palm leaf manuscripts which is preserved in the Museum.

We visit the oldest organic tea estate - the Temi Tea Garden where we get to see the tea leaves grown locally in the best weather conditions, handpicked by seasoned hands that pack a burst of flavour in every sip of tea you drink. A round of tea tasting always makes our guests want to pick up a few to take back home.
