Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.

Wildlife is buried within our company roots, it is essential that we preserve the natural habitat and home of all creatures, great and small. Therefore, we contribute a percentage of each safari sold to wildlife conservation all over the world and we are always looking out for new projects to get involved with.

Whenever possible we try to use accommodation that savours every drop of precious water; from using environmentally friendly flushing toilets, saving rain water for washing to using solar power for heating. Accommodation when traveling will vary, but we do try to be as environmentally friendly as possible, by promoting the use of locally eco-lodges where we can. As a result of this we minimise the impact on the local environment at the same time as providing the traveler with a high level of comfort. This is a private safari which means that your impact on the environment and wildlife is kept to a minimum at all times resulting in you also being likely to see more! Please bear in mind that this is not always possible to find eco-friendly accommodation in some remote destinations; if this is the case then we make every effort to alert the management of the accommodation in question to ways of improving their service with the environment in mind.

Chan Chich lodge features 30,000 acres of wilderness, surrounded by half a million acres of conservation lands that provide some of the best-wildlife viewing opportunity in the Americas. In the construction process of building the lodge the trees and palms harvested from the fields were processed and used in the construction of the lodge. All of the finished milling was done at Chan Chich, as well as the construction of all the window frames, doors and beds. The thatched roofs of the cottages were inspired by traditional Mayan architecture which was wanted to keep the feel of the country going. The Bowen family donated 10,000 acres of the Gallon Jug estate to the Rio Brave Conservation and Management Area. Over time this has turned into the Programme for Belize and grown to 260,000 acres of conservation wilderness. Another set of land near to Gallon Jug is almost 200,000 acres which has been created for sustainable forest management practices which has been certified by the Rainforest Alliance through the Forest Stewardship Council. The family have an additional 3,000 acres which are cultivated using organic agricultural practices for coffee, a pasture-fed cattle project to improve local stock and the vegetables used to make the delicious food at the lodge. Roughly 60% if the food served in the restaurant is organically produced on the farm and the local community.

We aim to reduce waste and our impact on the environment within our destinations, and at home in the UK, where our offices are based. We work in partnership with the Borough of Brighton & Hove in an attempt to recycle and reuse as much as possible. Our clients are always advised on the best way to do this when away. We recommend using environmentally friendly shampoos, soaps and toiletries, to avoid leaving any litter (whether it is biodegradable or not). Where possible we try to always use shared excursions and transfers to minimise the carbon emissions from the vehicles used. The purpose of our safaris is to contribute to the local populations, communities and projects. We give our travelers advise on how to interact with the local population, flora and fauna in order to minimise any negative impact.

Where possible, we always use local suppliers in preference to others, whether this is in the purchase of provisions, accommodation, transport or equipment. Through the employment of our local ground operators, who use local guides and drivers, money is fed directly back into individual families and villages that would otherwise not benefit from tourism, as well as giving more jobs to local people. Great guiding is essential on wildlife adventures and few people know a place better than the locals, we whole-heartedly do not believe in taking jobs from the local populations for our own needs. At Blancaneaux Lodge the produce is truly local, the gardening staff are all local and grow organic fruit and vegetables used at the lodge. Guests can visit the garden and have a tour/learn about the garden and the challenges presented by gardening in the jungle.

The purpose of our safaris is to contribute to local populations, communities and projects. We give our travelers advise on how to interact with the local population, flora and fauna in order to minimise any negative impact. We make sure tourists have the opportunity to buy local souvenirs and handicrafts, assisting further to contribute to the community, and always give support to local communities and conservation agencies. We advise people not to bargain just for the sake of it and because it is the "thing to do", you should pay what you feel the object is worth to yourself and the vendor, bearing in mind local cultures.

The Bowen Family at the Chan Chich lodge supports the Casey Community Primary School that provides education to the staff's children at Gallon Jug Farm. Raffle tickets from the Gallon Jug Casey School can be purchased at the lodge front desk by guests to help the students further their education. The lodge also provides free housing, electricity and water for their staff.
