Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your vacation will help support conservation and local people.

We are extremely passionate about Japan and therefore try to reduce any potential negative environmental impact our vacations could have on this beautiful country.

Throughout the tour you will be using Japan's super-efficient public transport system and will be traveling by the famous Shinkansen (bullet train), local buses and trains and even ferry.

A large amount of this trip is spent exploring national parks, gardens and primeval forests by foot. Our group sizes are deliberately small in order to minimise our environmental impact – especially when walking through protected areas and areas with high densities of wildlife, such as Yakushima.

In order to save energy, water and detergent we will provide you with an eco-card in English and Japanese that you can leave in your room to inform hotel staff not to change your towels and sheets. You’ll be encouraged to recycle throughout the tour and refill water bottles rather than repeatedly buying plastic bottles from the vending machines.

The Impacts of this Trip

We include as many small, local and independent accommodation options in our trips as possible. As well as providing a quintessentially Japanese experience for our clients, in supporting these small businesses we help to play a small part in keeping these traditional establishments alive.

Owing to the rural nature of this itinerary, this trip includes a particularly high number of nights in traditional family-run accommodation – in Unzen and in Mount Aso. As you’d expect from a ryokan, all meals are home-cooked using plenty of seasonal produce and local ingredients.

Whilst in Nagasaki, you’ll have a chance to not only learn about the devastating effects of the atomic bomb during World War Two with a visit to the Peace Memorial Park and museum, but also learn about the arrival of Portuguese and Dutch traders to the area during a long period of isolation.

Wherever possible, we use private local guides – serving the dual benefit of supporting local workers and offering clients a genuine and knowledgeable insight from people who have spent their lives getting to know the area.
