1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
The landscapes and monuments were astonishing.
2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Be flexible, be prepared to use squat toilets and always bring your own toilet paper!
3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes. Our vacation definitely brought benefits to our local hosts, driver and guide.
4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
It was absolutely brilliant. Our tour guide (Timocin Sahin) was exceptional in every way - a true polymath with a wealth of knowledge about his country, its history, flora and fauna, and a hugely engaging and warm personality. He went above and beyond to meet all our needs. I loved the variety of the itinerary, and we really enjoyed the company of our fellow travelers. We will definitely use the operator/Responsible Travel again.
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.
PlanetThis walking trip has a maximum group size of 12 people. Through keeping our groups small, we have greater access to fragile cultures, better opportunities to interact with local people and minimise the human impact on the fragile sites and ecosystems we visit.
Slower exploration on foot through the landscapes and villages of this less-visited area of Turkey allows us the time to appreciate and learn about the region, its history and the traditional life-style of its people.
A strict environmental Leave No Trace policy, to ensure that the habitats we visit are not damaged or spoilt from our presence is adhered to throughout the trips, and every effort it made to work with local partners and clients to reduce single-use plastic use.
A Code of Conduct is included in all pre-departure information preparing our clients on how to travel responsibly, including advice on cultural norms, treading lightly, tipping and bartering
Our tour leaders are trained to uphold our policies, including briefing clients on appropriate/responsible behaviour throughout their trip
PeopleThrough expertise and first-hand knowledge, we aim to create thoughtful and carefully crafted itineraries, which will leave a long-lasting positive impact on both our clients and the people and places we are privileged to visit.
Wherever possible we stay in locally owned accommodation, eat in locally owned establishments and purchase supplies from the locally as we go. On this walking vacation we support the economy of a remote area of the country where few tourists visit.
In valleys of the Kackar mountains, we employ a local walking guide, who leads a gentle walk along the village-water channels to the site of Parkhali (Barhal) monastery. Here we also stay in a guest house, run by a father and son team, for two nights, enjoying not only the locally sourced and home cooked meals, but the company of our hosts.
Throughout this walking trip there will be opportunities meet local people and learn about the day-to-day life in the region.
