Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Slovenia family vacation with teenagers

Environment

All our tour leaders are passionate about responsible travel, so our messaging is always consistent when it comes to environmental issues. As this trip is packed with activities in the nature, such as canoeing and rafting in different lakes and rivers or exploring caves and mountains, it is important to make as little impact as possible.

Slovenia is proud to be one of the greenest countries in the world, so we must make sure that we appreciate its natural beauty responsibly. Our tour leaders will actively educate travelers by showing an example, such as picking up rubbish others have left behind, encourage everyone to refill bottles and recycle if possible. We are trying to educate our suppliers too by giving them business and delivering our message to them.

We take a lot of care when choosing your accommodation. We try to avoid the big chain hotels, opting for locally run guesthouses instead. The hotels featured on this trip practice the worldwide water usage program – “Replace or Reuse”. This simply asks customers to state whether they want to replace or reuse their towels using a door/bathroom hanger. Hotels have little place cards in their bathrooms explaining that every day millions of gallons of water are wasted to wash towels that have only been used once. If clients are happy to use their towels for another night they hang it up, if they would like a clean one they leave it on the floor. Many hotels will also ask guests to take short showers to minimise water wastage.

As a company we are strongly committed to carbon offsetting. The main sources of carbon emission from our trips (transport, accommodation and waste) are assessed and offset into renewable energy projects. We’ve offset over 250,000 tonnes of carbon emissions from our trips and offices worldwide, including over 40,000 tonnes of carbon in 2016. Part of your trip cost is dedicated to carbon offsetting.

Community

We encourage our suppliers to adopt a more sustainable approach and often select suppliers who already have green practices in place. Traveling in a small group allows us to stay in family-run hotels rather than the big chains. We also support small restaurants and cafes, serving locally sourced produce.

We work closely with our operator to ensure that all our guides are local, and that in exchange for their expertise they’re paid and treated fairly. Your leader will give a briefing on responsible tourism issues to help you understand how you can help to reduce your impact and maximise the benefits of your visit on the local community. Leaders on this trip are always European, and wages are standard salaries as found elsewhere in the tourism industry.

All equipment used on this trip is sourced from local companies, for example we use a local supplier for rafting on the Sava Dolinka River.

This tour actively encourages guests to chat with local people, visit local cafes and bars, purchase local produce, gifts and crafts and discover what life is really like in this part of Europe.
