Vacation type
This trip is for families only (including any aunts, uncles or cousins who’d like to come along, of course). As long as you’re traveling with a child under the age of 18, you’re a family in our eyes. Plus, unlike other travel companies, children aged 17 years and younger receive a 10% discount off the price of their trip. Traveling our way is a bit like traveling with a group of friends. Made up of 3-5 like-minded families, the kids tend to hit it off on these trips straight away, allowing you to enjoy some well earned R&R. We often find the whole family ends up making friendships with people from all over the world, staying in touch long after the adventure ends.

Our family group sizes are small enough to avoid the crowds and reach some out-of-the-way places, but big enough for a good social mix. Our average group size of 10 allows us to hop aboard local boats, buses or trains, eat at friendly, family-run restaurants and kick back in traditional accommodation and homestays.

We know the biggest challenge on a family trip is keeping the kids entertained. So we’ve planned in advance. Nearly all of our hotels feature pools, and each day has a great mix of action-packed adventure and flexible free time. Your local leader can also suggest activities based on your kid’s hobbies or school curriculum.

Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Croatia family vacation, small group adventure

Environment

Croatia is currently experiencing a tourism boom, so it’s crucial for us to make sure that all activities we do are sustainable. For example, we take a lot of care when choosing accommodation and instead of staying in the big chain hotels, we are opting for locally run guesthouses instead. The Croatian hotels featured on this trip practice the worldwide water usage program – “Replace or Reuse”. This simply asks customers to state whether they want to replace or reuse their towels using a door/bathroom hanger.

Hotels have little place cards in their bathrooms explaining that every day millions of gallons of water are wasted to wash towels that have only been used once. If clients are happy to use their towels for another night they hang it up, if they would like a clean one they leave it on the floor. Many hotels will also ask guests to take short showers to minimise water wastage.

Choosing the right means of transport is another important decision for us to make sure that we travel sustainably. Even though it’s not always easy to access different places by public transport in Croatia, we use public bus (and even ferry!) as much as possible.

As a company we are strongly committed to carbon offsetting. The main sources of carbon emission from our trips (transport, accommodation and waste) are assessed and offset into renewable energy projects. We’ve offset over 250,000 tonnes of carbon emissions from our trips and offices worldwide, including over 40,000 tonnes of carbon in 2016. Part of your trip cost is dedicated to carbon offsetting.

Community

We work closely with our operator to ensure that all our guides are local, and that in exchange for their expertise they’re paid and treated fairly. Your leader will give a briefing on responsible tourism issues to help you understand how you can help to reduce your impact and maximise the benefits of your visit on the local community.

On this trip you will spend the week in comfortable, locally staffed hotels allowing you to invest in smaller businesses, where your money stays local. Your guide will also be able to recommend or arrange for you to eat in some unique, community-central restaurants.

In Ston, the group will also visit a donkey farm just outside the town. This working farm is a Croatian government supported agritourism project that focuses on producing goat and donkey milk for trade. Take the chance to enjoy a homecooked traditional meal on the farmstead and even sample the local cheeses!
