Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your vacation will help support conservation and local people.

Environment
The Cairngorms is the largest National Park in the UK and is important because of its level of endangered species. It is home to a wide variety of wildlife, some found nowhere else in the UK.

Some examples of wildlife we hope to observe are Red deer, Reindeer, Roe deer, Red squirrel, Dipper, Crested Tit and Golden Eagles, just to name a few. As a qualified South African Field Guide, I am trained to approach wildlife without causing them distress or them being aware of our presence. The Cairngorms has had generations of low intensity management so it has kept much of its wilderness and we will help to keep it this way on our trip.

Camping is a low impact form of accommodation, if approached responsibly. We will remove all the waste that we take into the National Park and I will take it to the local waste site so it can be recycled. The body wash that is provided and the washing up liquid that I use is environmentally friendly so any cleaning products will not have a negative impact on the environment.

We have a 'leave no trace' policy, which means I pack down the campsite after the trip, there can be no evidence that we camped there at all.

The Impacts of this Trip

Perthshire is visited by people from both the UK and from all over the world and has always given tourists a Ceud Mle Filte (hundred thousand welcomes). Although most of this trip is spent in nature, there is time at the beginning and end to extend the trip and explore the local area. As a local, I am happy to recommend local guest houses and activities should any guest wish to make the most of their time here.

Like most places the local people want visitors to enjoy themselves but expect them to show respect to the local area. We will be respectful of our surroundings so not to disturb locals and visitors alike enjoy the Caringorm National Park. I am a local to the area so you will be in good hands.

You can be happy in the knowledge that 5% of my annual net profits is given to PADS, a local dog kennel. Your money will be going to help abandoned dogs get kept safe with food and toys until they can find their new home. I have personally rescued dogs from PADS in the past and they take great care of their dogs.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

We lived camping in the forest, feeling like we had it to ourselves.
Spotting deer as we walked through the trees was amazing, as was learning
about the bats with the bat detector.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

It's a bit like camping with a butler! It felt a bit strange at first with Dane
doing all the cooking and clearing up, but we got used to it! My tip is to
communicate all your concerns and preferences to Dane beforehand- he is
so accommodating and friendly.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Our vacation had very low environmental impacts and was a hugely positive, close up experience of nature for our children.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

A wonderful experience for our family of five, giving us a chance to get away
from it all and have exclusive access to a knowledgeable guide for the whole
time.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

There are honestly too many fantastic parts of the trip to be able to pick just one! We loved having the butterfly net on walks to catch interesting arthropods and inspect them! We loved star gazing with a cup of hot chocolate next to the fire while Dane told us traditional stories about the stars.
The walks we went on were so beautiful and off the beaten track. It really makes the trip being able to go and explore places where others haven't been.
It's a fantastic feeling to be able to have a proper base camp to go back to that has little home comforts like blankets and hot water bottles but still being in a
really lovely spot hidden from the public. Falling asleep to the sound of a babbling burn is something that everyone should do at least once in their life.
Waking up early to watch the sun rise over a loch to watch for otters was beautiful!
All of this being said... The BEST part for me was the wildlife that we saw - a plethora of Red Dear, an abundance of Roe Dear, Red Squirrels, Scottish
Crossbills and myriad interesting insects.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Take a good pair of walking boots, wet weather gear and a pack of cards. You literally don't need anything else!!

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

We had zero impact on the environment that we stayed in as we were camping in the beautiful Scottish Highlands. Dane is very concious of the environment
in everything that he does. Dane is also a big supporter of a local dog rescue center where some of his profit goes too!!

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

10/10 would recommend Dane to anyone that was looking for a wilderness adventure without the hastle of having to put up your own tent and cook for
yourself. His knowledge or the natural landscape, wildlife and traditional folklore is fantastic. He tells brilliant camp fire stories and is genuinely one of the
nicest people with the kindest heart we've ever met.
