Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Vietnamese hill tribes small group tour

Environment

Each traveler on this trip is given a reusable bag made by Indigo. Indigo is a not-for-profit organisation that focuses on preserving the cloth weaving and dyeing traditions of the minority peoples such as the Dao, Tay and Thai. Indigo produces the bags using only local material sourced from the northern mountains, and the fabrics are made from organic cotton and sewn by deaf mute employees. By providing our travelers with these bags, we help them to avoid creating additional waste with plastic shopping bags. It also gives travelers a chance to support local organisations preserving local crafts.

During the homestay experience in Ba Be Lake travelers will be able to learn more about local building traditions and materials. The buildings that travelers stay in are traditional stilt houses, made by locals from locally-sourced natural materials – bamboo, palm leaves and clay bricks.

As a company we are strongly committed to carbon offsetting. The main sources of carbon emission from our trips (transport, accommodation and waste) are assessed and offset into renewable energy projects. We’ve offset over 250,000 tonnes of carbon emissions from our trips and offices worldwide, including over 40,000 tonnes of carbon in 2016. Part of the cost of your trip will be dedicated to carbon offsetting.

Community

Get to know the places and people of Northern Vietnam on this trip by spending two nights in homestays with local families. Lao Chai and Ba Be Lake are beautiful places to stay, but travelers will appreciate them even more through storytelling and explanations from their local hosts. By including homestays in minority ethnic villages on this trip, it’s not only the travelers who are rewarded. Local people benefit economically and their traditions are preserved.

Travelers on this trip celebrate the end of their adventure with an included dinner at the KOTO training restaurant in Hanoi. KOTO is a project aimed at providing hospitality training to underprivileged young people. Their two-year hospitality program equips them with the skills necessary for a sustainable career. At the end of the program trainees are in high demand from hotels and restaurants across Vietnam and around the world. KOTO is supported by our foundation, which aims in part to support projects which provide access to skills training and job opportunities for local people, particularly within the tourism industry.

On this trip, travelers will also have the opportunity to visit Ms. Mai’s Handmade Linen Fabric & Textile Cooperative in Lung Tam commune. Founded in 1988 with only three members, the co-op initially employed women who were victims of human trafficking. Police rescued many of the trafficked women, but on returning to their homes found that they were ostracised by their families. Mrs Mai’s co-op gave them a home and meaningful employment. Survivors of domestic violence have also found a safe environment in which to earn a living at Mrs Mai’s. The co-op now has 130 traditional looms, creating 135 jobs for villagers. It also plays an important role in preserving the brocade craft traditions of the local area, which were once on the verge of extinction.
