Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.

We understand that travel and tourism can both benefit and harm the environment, the economy, the social structure, culture and communities in any country. As a company we love Latin America and strive to protect the rural and urban landscapes which we take you to visit. We work with local operators which have a proven record in training guides to set a good example in their respect for their surroundings and pass on advice and encouragement to visitors on how to preserve the fragile environment in simple ways, such as by refilling a water bottle, disposing of rubbish responsibly, not disturbing local communities or wildlife and not purchasing items made from endangered animals or plants.

Moreover, we work closely together with local foundations, including the LATA Foundation who runs social and environmental projects throughout the continent. At the moment, LATA works in partnership with Adopt an Estuary and Island Friends Roatan on a pioneering sewer creek restoration project on the island of Roatán. The project is helping to transform black water creeks and turn them into safe and healthy water systems, as well as preventing the spread of dengue fever and malaria. It is also creating a habitat for marine life, including juvenile reef fish, barracudas and crustaceans. In the future, they are planning to create a cultural center next to the Estuary hiring local employees and featuring Latin and Caribbean music, clean food and beverages, and teach visitors about the project.

When selecting accommodation, we give preference to hotels and lodges which have a verifiable commitment to eco-friendly practices. At Pico Bonito you will stay at the first-class eponymous Lodge. The flora and fauna in the park are being protected by different projects, including forest restoration projects. The focus of the lodge is to give its visitors the most varied eco-friendly experiences possible. These include early morning and night time hikes, white-water rafting, and guided tours of Mayan ruins and the botanical gardens. Furthermore, Barefoot Cay just off Roatán Island, was rewarded the platinum award for TripAdvisor’s Green Leaders for initiatives including solar panels for their well pump and water heaters, rainwater collection, recycling of plastics and metals, and energy efficient air conditioning throughout the resort.

Over the years, we’ve developed strong relationships with our local suppliers who all share our vision and agree to upholding a commitment to local communities and their development through fair employment policies, and ensure that benefits from tourism filter down to local communities.

What’s more, we pride ourselves on delivering our clients truly authentic and unforgettable experiences in Latin America which connect travelers with the people whose country they visit. On this tour you will have the opportunity to visit local communities in Cayos Cochinos and Pico Bonito National Park. You will also visit a coffee nursery where you can observe how the coffee is harvested and processed. A local guide will be present to explain these processes, as well as to point out the different species of birds that live on the coffee farms. We will also encourage you to purchase items from local shops and visit locally owned restaurants and bars during this tour. This all together will give you the opportunity to gain a unique insight into the daily life in Honduras. At the same time, you will support the local economy and promote the culture of the country.

Our expert guides are on hand to provide advice on the best way to communicate with the local community, what and what not to buy, as well as explaining the importance of giving gifts responsibly, and acting in a respectful way while taking photographs.
