Environment

The main focus of this classic Rwanda itinerary will be the fascinating abundance of wildlife that resides in this beautiful country, and as passionate conservation enthusiasts we place a great deal of emphasis on ensuring that your visit will bring nothing but positive effects to these remarkable animals and their way of life. One of the many ways in which we endeavour to ensure this is to solely use experienced, local and reliable operators and providers who are as committed to the fight to protect these vulnerable animals as we are. The operators of your tour have excellent sustainability policies in place and throughout your tour you will be offered guidance not only on how to behave around the wildlife you will see but also on how you can help with the conservation efforts that are in place to improve their lives and populations. Your pre-departure information will also include information on this and we find that the vast majority of our customers return from our wildlife trips with a renewed passion for contributing to and supporting these very worthwhile causes.

As a company ourselves we support numerous wildlife charities worldwide including Africat and the Dian Fossey Gorilla Foundation. One of the major highlights of your trip will be the unforgettable experience of meeting some of Rwanda’s famous mountain gorillas and during your time in Volcanoes National Park you will have the chance to visit Dian Fossey’s grave to pay your respects to this remarkable woman who was world-renowned for her tireless efforts in the studying of and conservation of the mountain gorillas. Her name was made famous by the film “Gorillas in the Mist” which was adapted from her book of the same name. This poignant trek will remind us of the plight of these remarkable animals and we will learn more about how Dian and others have helped to turn things around remarkably for generations to come.

As a team of dedicated wildlife conservation enthusiasts we fully understand the importance of opening up these experiences to like-minded people from all over the world. We believe that “good” tourism to these parts of the world directly has a very positive impact on the conservation efforts that are in place across the country. The cost of this trip includes the cost of the permit for your gorilla and chimp trekking experiences and a large portion of this cost goes towards the ongoing fight to protect these vulnerable animals. Funds go towards numerous projects including research, primate doctors, and improving security so as to eradicate poaching and other human impacts. Without the tourism that gorilla trekking brings, the funds available to this would be substantially less.

As well as the fight to protect the wildlife, we also place a huge emphasis on ensuring that your trip will have as small of an impact as possible on the country’s unique natural environment. Your pre-departure information, which will be sent digitally as opposed to printed, will contain information on how you can minimise your carbon footprint including advice on recycling and waste disposal and appropriate use of water. The operators of your tour also take their commitments to the environment very seriously and this is evident in the carefully selected lodges and hotels used on this itinerary. The operators of all of your accommodation options will have in place sustainability policies and practices that have been designed to protect the natural environment, wildlife and culture of their local areas. For example, the Mountain Gorilla View Lodge in Volcanoes National Park is a dedicated eco-lodge which has been constructed solely using locally available materials to ensure limited disruption of the surrounding environment. Likewise, the operators of every accommodation you will stay in have practices in place for reducing energy and helping the people of their area to continue to protect these pristine environments.

As a company we firmly believe that environmental responsibility starts at home (and the work place of course). We encourage recycling of waste as a company and as individuals, and where possible for business use we use public transport. We are also heavily involved with a project to recycle used or damaged binoculars, which are then sent to conservation projects across the world.

Community

As well as respecting the wildlife of the destinations we visit, we also place a huge emphasis on respecting the cultures and people of these fascinating countries. We solely work with providers and suppliers who are passionate about protecting the communities, wildlife and landscapes of Rwanda, and our tour providers are committed to creating and upholding transparent and honest relationships with local communities and suppliers. We use an experienced, local and reliable travel company who employ local people, so that not only do they hold intimate knowledge of the regions and how to protect them, but also so that as much of the revenue created as possible is filtered straight through to the local communities. Indigenously owned and managed, our agents provide career opportunities that without the tourism aspect would not be possible and are fully committed to their in-depth sustainability policy. They also support numerous local projects.

The accommodations used on your tour have also been carefully selected to ensure the utilisation of operators with proven track records of treating staff well and fairly, and who have policies in place for giving back to their local communities.

Your tour will include a number of opportunities for cultural insights including a visit to the Gatsura community close to Volcanoes National Park. Here you can engage with the community and learn all about their lifestyle and traditions and we will be happy to share first-hand advice on creating meaningful and respectful relationships between the tourists and residents. You will also take a guided tour of Kigali which includes a visit to the Gisozi Genocide Memorial Centre. This trip will offer you the chance to learn more about Rwanda’s troubled past and appreciate just how far the country has come since. It will also offer you the chance to pay tribute to the genocide victims.

Solely using local agencies and providers means we have up to date local information and can therefore provide the most relevant information in our pre-departure literature. This includes information on on-going initiatives and community efforts that we actively encourage our customers to become involved in, including schemes to provide school children with equipment, information on cultural etiquette and advice on how to engage with and help the local communities. As a company we are proud of our principle based values which our community can always depend on. We support several home and overseas charities, organisations and campaigns including Msaada, and sponsor numerous individuals and underprivileged children in many countries. We are committed to ethically working with overseas partners who employ and support local communities and local guides who know and love their region like no other, delighted to share knowledge and are dedicated to looking after our valued customers.
