Responsible tourism

Eastern Algarve guided cycling vacation

Carbon reduction

Your vacation will help support local people and conservation. We must also reduce CO2. Learn about the CO2 emissions of this vacation and how to reduce them.

Environment

We are very aware of the environmental impact caused by tourism in our unspoiled region of the Baixo Guadiana, which has the most nature reserves and protected areas in the Algarve and Alentejo.
Our region is known for its deserted beaches, lagoons, world class bird reserves, ancient salt pans, pristine forests and orchards, blue lakes with mountain streams and the international Guadiana River estuary.
We also have the warmest climate and more sunshine than anywhere else in Spain and Portugal, our golf courses are very busy during the winter months!

All our routes and trails associated with the GR15 are fully marked, giving you more time to appreciate the landscape, minimizing the impact on unspoiled forests and fields. We try to use apps, electronic maps and guides as much as possible to avoid printing. We encourage recycling at the eco points in the villages and at our hotels.
We recommend the consumption of local meat, fish, fruit and vegetables, and encourage people to drink from the tap and refill their own bottles.

All our hotels use solar energy to reduce energy use based on fossil fuels. They have also adopted policies to minimize laundry (for towels and sheets) and show guests how to save energy.

Community

Our region is the poorest part of the Algarve and the Alentejo.
Most of our villages and towns are isolated and suffer from mass migration to large urban areas on the Western coast. The older generation stayed behind and depend on subsistence farming and welfare grants.

Responsible tourism that respects nature, local people and their culture is the only sustainable economic activity that will create business opportunities and youth employment. All our staff and those of our service providers are locals.

We take our guests on amazing experiences that are natural and very authentic. Allowing them to interact with local people who are very welcoming.
Our small, comfortable and charming hotels are owned by local families that will welcome you with open arms. Try the local cafιs and restaurants on our recommended list for delicious seafood and meat dishes, don΄t forget the unique cakes and desserts that are inspired by the local fruit.
The taste and quality are amazing because everything is cooked fresh and sourced at local farms that use traditional organic farming techniques.

Not what I expected, (discussed with agent personally) but very attentive, good weather, cycling was more of a challenge, due to the expertise and expectation,

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

It was a great balance between challenging biking (in particular in Alcoutim area) and relaxation.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

At the end of June, Portugal is hot and dry. I lived in a sundress when I wasn't biking. All the stays had pools, which I benefited from, if I did it again, I would ask to be taken to the beach one afternoon (I couldn't ride because there was no secure place for the bike and no bike lock).

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Local bike shop provided the (new, wonderful) bike and the guide, 2/3 hotels I stayed in were small, operating with attention to the environment, the third was more traditional urban hotel, not sure of their conservation efforts.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Really good, I felt safe, well taken care of and the riding was quite good -- with excellent road quality in the Alcoutim area, not so good in the Casta Marim, and poor near Olhao. The great benefit of a guide is that I had no worries of navigating, and could just focus on seeing the beautiful landscapes and enjoy the ride.
