Luxury Mexico self drive vacation
Description of Luxury Mexico self drive vacation
This trip can be tailor made throughout the year to suit your requirements
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.
PlanetTravel and tourism can have positive as well as negative consequences for the environment, the economy and the social and cultural structures of communities. Sustainable tourism -the travel trade’s principles of using tourism to benefit local communities, conserve natural resources, and bolster the survival of cultural heritage – lies close to our heart. Our love and passion for Latin America makes us strive to protect the destinations we take you to visit. As members of AITO, we’re committed to AITO’s Sustainable Tourism Guidelines, which means that we ensure that environmental and cultural demands are kept as low as possible.
We carefully select our local partners, some we’ve worked with for over 25 years. They have a proven record in training guides to set a good example in their respect for the surroundings and the local communities. They make sure to pass on advice and encouragement to visitors on how to preserve the environment, including by refilling water bottles, disposing of rubbish in a responsible way and not disturbing the local flora and fauna.
We strive to use accommodation that fits in with the environment they’re set in. On this vacation you will stay at a few traditional haciendas, including Hacienda Chichen near Chichén itzá, Hacienda Uyamon on the grounds of a 300-year-old cattle ranch and Hacienda San Jose Cholul which is enveloped in exuberant Yucatán forest. Especially Hacienda Uyamon is worth highlighting. The old central building has been beautifully restored and repainted using warm Mexican reds and yellows. The twelve freestanding colonial-style villas are scattered within the hacienda grounds and let you wander amongst overgrown ruins and ceiba trees to reach your own private retreat. Furthermore, the pool is within what remains of a centuries-old warehouse, surrounded by atmospherically crumbling walls and columns that once supported the long-gone roof. We believe that these such accommodation are important in preserving the area’s cultural and historical heritage, and contribute in enhancing the experience for our clients at the same time.
During this vacation you have the opportunity to visit many archaeological sites of interest, including Edzná, Calakmul and Chichén Itzá. Your guides will be able to explain the importance of these sites and their significance in history. Furthermore, these are protected sites and your guides will ask you to respect certain rules and guidelines – these include not touching the remains and staying on dedicated trails where applicable.
In addition, you’ll have the opportunity to visit the Sian Ka’an Bisophere Reserve on the Mayan Riviera. This is a small ecotourism and education center, an example of sustainable development in sensitive tropical ecosystems. The reserve embraces a tropical forest, mangrove and savannah and a coast offshore marine reserve. The area is abundant with wildlife. You have the options to take a boat trip through the wetlands, hike through the jungle to the historical site of Muyil or swim and float on the freshwater stream through the channels.
PeopleWe’ve developed strong relationships with local suppliers who all share our vision and agree to uphold a commitment to local communities and their development through fair employment policies and responsible energy use, and ensure that benefits from tourism filter down to local communities.
Moreover, a self-drive vacation provides you with the opportunity to make stops and visit local villages and towns along the way. From Cancún to Mérida for example you have the choice the take a faster dual carriageway route or a slower, but much more interesting in terms of culture and landscape, regional free road. We would encourage you to use the latter, since it means that this route passes through small towns and villages where the inhabitants follow a traditional slow-pace Yucatán way of life. It offers you the chance to stop at the beautiful Spanish colonial city of Valladolid, where you can experience authentic Mexico. We are always happy to provide recommendations for interesting sites, villages, towns, restaurants, bars and markets along route – all tried and tested by ourselves.
Furthermore, we aim to offer our clients with unforgettable experiences. At Mérida for example you will have the opportunity to visit the colonial center and local establishments. Fiestas are often organised in this town, and you may well find one going on, with live music and street stalls, while you’re there.
