Norway Northern Lights and whale watching vacation

Carbon reduction

Your vacation will help support local people and conservation. We must also reduce CO2. Learn about the CO2 emissions of this vacation and how to reduce them.

Environment

Our primary aim is to give our guests an impression of "the not so very often seen" part of northern Norway – wildlife, fisheries, "abandoned" places and the magnificent landscape of The Norwegian North.

All our voyages are being made in complete understanding with our cultural, social and ecological surroundings. By this we mean that we shall move like a shadow through the landscape. When we have left, no one shall ever see that we were there.

In an ecological context, we will do our very best to sort our litter, so that what can be recycled will be delivered in a proper place. To avoid using diesel, and thereby prevent polluting, we if possible will use the sails (but if there is no wind, this can be difficult….).

Our main dishes will basically be from fish, shellfish and game (reindeer), which means that we will support local fishermen and the saami people of the North. All our other food – naturally – has to be bought in the local stores we will pass on our way.

We will also harvest if we can, from the fish in the sea, rivers or small lakes to the berries on the plains. The harvesting is off course to be done with good conduct, and the main goal with it is to supply ourselves with food.

Our voyages are not actively guided voyages. We want our guests to be the curious, adventurous and an active part. We are only there to make you feel well and responsible.

The area we sail is densely populated an the villages are few. If we should happen to have a night stop in one of these, there will be a fair chance for our guests to experience local fishing related activities, chat with the local fishermen, many of them alone in smaller boats (30-40 foot) working the sea during all seasons and in all kinds of weather. The gladiators of the sea! And an important part of the North Norwegian environment

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

So many whales! Orcas and humpbacks!! And we did see Northern Lights, which was amazing!

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

don't pack too much! Limited space on the boat. And be prepared for very cold weather. And be prepared to eat a lot of very good food!

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Benefited local people as I stayed at the local hotel. Environmental impacts: concerned that the waste from the toilet went directly into the ocean, though
through a "maceration" system, also that they burned plastic containers in the wood stove. The actual whale watching was done responsibly, much more so
than the snorkelers, who seem to follow no rules and seemed to be getting in the orcas' way, especially when they were resting or hunting. Norway
really needs to enact some regulations! Some of the snorkelers were also being very unsafe in how they operated around larger boats....very close, etc.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Very good! The Goxheim is a fun, funky boat, Charles Wara is a personable, fun, captain who worked very hard to make our trip great...and he's a great chef!
