Ghana history and wildlife vacation

Carbon reduction

Your vacation will help support local people and conservation. We must also reduce CO2. Learn about the CO2 emissions of this vacation and how to reduce them.

Environment

Environment
Although this is a tailor-made vacation we encourage customers to consider the smaller-scale properties on offer, particularly those with good eco credentials. This includes most Accra, Cape Coast and Kumasi.

During the vacation, where possible, all sightseeing tours include walking between sites to avoid lots of short drives which are most harmful in terms of pollution.

We ask all our customers to respect the environment. Litter, in particular, is damaging to the fragile urban and coastal ecosystems and we encourage people to take their litter home. All our trips are tailor made for individuals to minimize the impact of large groups on traditional communities so that interaction can be more personal and respectful.

To ensure the best possible service to our customers we engage services that make as low an impact as possible on the environment and local culture, whilst helping to generate long term employment and benefits for local people. Raising awareness of the culture, politics and economy of areas visited encourages responsible tourism practice and indirectly aides the preservation of the Kingdom's most precious resources.

We take our responsibilities to the environment seriously and strive to make improvements where we can; there is always more work to be done but little by little one travels far. As a company we employ responsible policies such as recycling paper, ink cartridges, glass and cardboard; we minimize the use of electricity and conducting the vast majority of our correspondence and promotion via the internet and email, minimizing the amount of paper used for our activities. We also compost waste in our company garden.

Community

As with many of the trips that we offer, this tour has a strong focus on local culture and different ethnic groups. Where possible we try to ensure that local people benefit from our presence.

We spend time with a number of different ethnic groups on this trip, from the Ga's to the different ethnic groups like the Ashanti's. Tourism rarely reaches here and we recognize that we have a special responsibility to ensure that the encounters that we have are carried out in a responsible manner. We consult extensively with local tribal elders to ensure that our presence here is very much welcomed – we feel that it is very important to be seen as guests here rather than outsiders come to merely look. We are able to spend time with the communities learning about their traditions and customs like in the Ashanti Kingdom.

We are careful not to disrupt the traditional way of life of the people that we meet. As a way to say thank you for allowing us to visit, we bring traditional gifts, such as sugar, tea and so on – we do not bring modern accoutrements that may change their way of life as we feel that it is important for all tribal groups that any move towards a more ‘modern’ lifestyle is made on their own terms and not imposed upon them. We give gifts to the elders of the villages who will then ensure that they are distributed appropriately, rather than just giving them to individuals, which can cause problems, jealousy and fights within small communities.

These are very traditional areas with certain codes of behavior, and the people here are not that accustomed to outsiders. We ensure that our travelers are appropriately briefed in order so as not to offend local sensibilities. This includes photography – while we recognize that many people are incredibly photogenic it is important for us to respect their wishes should they not want to have their photo taken, and our travelers are carefully briefed upon this.

Where possible we encourage our travelers to spend their money with local businesses; for this reason we do not include meals where it is feasible to eat outside of the hotels, in order that local restaurants are able to benefit from the presence of tourism, rather than the income being channeled just to the hotel.
