Accessible tourism overview:
As a small group tour specialist we have carried thousands of New Zealand travelers who have limited mobility, many who have decided our style of touring is right for them and tour with us many times over. We are now able to offer this same experience to our international travelers.
We offer door to door service. Wherever possible accomodation with lifts is chosen or ground floor accommodation is utiilised. We also book rooms designed specifically for limited mobility where available (e.g. with handrails, level flooring throughout etc.). There is no need for the traveler to handle their own luggage as this is taken care of by your friendly Kiwi guide and porterage assistance at the hotels.
Deaf or limited hearing:
All of our tour commentaries that the Kiwi guide utilises throughout the tour are available to be read online. Tours should be suitable for people with hearing limitations, but being accompanied by a hearing friend would be advised.
'Free from' food:
All dietary requirements are catered for. We have excellent communication with our meal providers and are used to requesting dietary requirements.
We have had many LGBT travelers. New Zealand is a progressive country and we provide the same travel experience for all our travelers.
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.
PlanetWe are committed to operating environmentally sustainable tours. By nature small group touring using one vehicle to transport multiple clients is more environmentally friendly than usual modes of travel including rental car or campervan. We have monitoring systems in place to ensure our vehicles are serviced and driven in line with the manufacturer’s guidelines making the running of the fleet as efficient as possible.
On this tour we cruise by small vessel through the Sounds to Lochmara Lodge Wildlife Recovery. Our visit supports an extensive Mainland Island predator control program in addition to a widespread habitat plan. Programs undertaken at Lochmara Lodge include working with injured wildlife, Kakariki, Weka, and the Marlborough Green Gecko as well as providing nesting boxes for the Blue Penguin and the Tree Weta.
We are a Qualmark Approved Visitor Service which means we have been independently reviewed and deemed to operate in an ethical, professional and environmentally sustainable way. Wherever possible we select suppliers that are also Qualmark approved and therefore deemed to operate in an ethical, professional and environmentally sustainable way.
We pay an annual licence and have official accreditation to operate on Department of Conservation land which demonstrates our commitment to the environment and sustainability. Payment of the license fee funds the protection of New Zealand’s national parks.
Office: We work from several home offices saving on travel time and fossil fuel consumption. All printer cartridges and paper is recycled. Both home offices water supply is supplied by rain water.
PeopleWe are a sponsor of the Whangarei Native Bird Recovery Centre. From Morepork chicks to one-legged kiwi birds and talking tuis, the Whangarei Native Bird Recovery Centre works tirelessly to provide help, treatment and rehabilitation for ill and injured native New Zealand birds. This award-winning center cares for over 1,200 birds per year and is part of the Department of Conservation's kiwi recovery program. We are proud to be a contributor to the conservation of New Zealand's native bird population, helping to ensure that our rare wildlife will be around for generations to come. Many of our favourite tours such as the Kiwi and Kakapo are named after our native birds.
We work with local partners on the tour including the following;
Historic Fyffe House, Kaikoura.
Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre.
The “Edwin Fox” Clipper restoration project on Picton’s waterfront.
The proceeds from MoaTrek tours help to keep locals employed and with the upkeep of these historic locations.
As well as supporting the local birdlife and marine life & history of the local townships, we also where possible visit local craftsmen, markets and restaurants further helping to support the local community.
