Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your vacation will help support conservation and local people.

As much of this tour takes place within Costa Rica’s rich natural environments, we have worked hard to ensure it is as environmentally-friendly as it can be in any area possible. This itinerary includes stops at a number of wildlife reserves and national parks. The economic support responsible tourism provides allows these parks and reserves to continue with their invaluable efforts in maintaining and protecting the country’s wildlife and natural areas.

In addition to places visited, the accommodation and transport of this tour have been tailored to be as eco-friendly as possible. Maquenque Eco Lodge functions, by its nature, to produce as small a carbon footprint as possible in every area; similarly, Sarapiquis Rainforest Lodge has been awarded for its efforts in ecotourism. Down to the smallest scale, a number of the lodges on this tour even farm their own produce on site, lessening food miles and the negative environmental impacts of industrial farming. When it comes to transportation, this tour uses eco-friendly means such as walking, boating and shared cars where possible, and only uses flights where strictly necessary, and where we have deemed the benefits of visiting these distant locations outweigh the negative impact of the flight itself.

Finally, to our travelers, we ask you to be vigilant about disposing of your waste and recycle where possible. During your trip you will be asked if you have any waste to dispose of when it is a suitable time in the itinerary. We strongly advise all travelers to bring a reusable water bottle - this is an easy way to save plastic waste and is detailed in our ‘What to bring’ trip notes for all trips to all destinations. Your guide will remind you where and when you can fill up your re-usable water bottle. We also encourage general sustainability - limited use of air-con for instance. This is something we focus on as an organisation and try to pass on to our travelers.

The Impacts of this Trip

As regular travelers, one thing that never ceases to amaze and inspire us is the kindness and generosity of local people, and we firmly believe that it is them that make these places special should and that they should benefit from our visit. For that reason, we use local guides who are offered fair working conditions and pay, and as a priority, stay in local accommodation and visit local shops, bars and eateries in order to have the maximum possible economic benefit on the local communities our travelers visit.

We believe that in rural areas such as those visited on this tour, responsible tourism can have a great impact through means of economic growth. Throughout the trip, our travelers have many excellent opportunities to support the communities they visit, for example when partaking on cooking classes or coffee tours, taking meals in family haciendas or in villages, or when buying local handicrafts directly from the village artisans themselves.

Through the use of knowledgeable local guides, we ensure that the people of the indigenous Bribri community met on this itinerary are not exploited in any way. Direct communications with indigenous groups such as these provide an opportunity for our travelers to take in rich cultures and importantly learn about beliefs and traditions. We work hard to ensure our travelers have only a positive effect on the people they come into contact with, and local guides prevent the risk of any negative impact that may occur as a result of cultural differences.
