PlanetDiscovery North Wales has been designed with careful consideration for its environmental impact. We have chosen accommodation that aligns with this, in particular the second section of the trip that is based at the Centre for Alternative Technology, a world renowned eco center, referred to as CAT. CAT is an educational charity dedicated to researching and communicating positive solutions for environmental change. The accommodation Buildings have been carefully designed with consideration to eco methods and materials, energy consumption is carefully minimised and on-site renewable energy installations feed into the grid. The buildings are heated by on-site biomass boilers, and showers and basins in the main building is heated by solar-thermal cells on the roof.
We're proud to work with Menai Bridge-based RibRide, one of the first boat tour operators in Europe to be awarded Blue Flag status. The award recognises the high quality service they provide that puts sustainability at the heart of their operations. Your Discover North Wales vacation includes a boat tour of the coastline and small islands around Anglesey, a haven for many native sea birds and marine mammals. By working with RibRide you have the reassurance that their practices ensure the continued health of this ecologically diverse marine habitat.
Wildlife is a big focus on this tour. North Wales is rich in wildlife: land mammals, sea mammals, sea birds and birds of prey in all sizes. Exploring Snowdon, the highest mountain in England and Wales, gives the opportunity to see the resident Welsh mountain goats. With their swept back horns and black and white shaggy coats, they're an unmistakable sight.
Look high above and you'll spot Buzzard's circling overhead. And if you're very lucky you'll glimpse the Red Kite, Wales' national bird. Once on the brink of extinction, this impressive bird is now flourishing in certain areas thanks to heroic conservation efforts.
By raising awareness of these endangered species and the conservation efforts to protect them, we can support the efforts of local conservation charities that depend on donations to carry out their important work.
PeopleDuring your Nature Discovery trip in North Wales, you will have time to explore the beautiful town of Trearddur Bay on Anglesey and the UNESCO accredited Dyfi valley. Both are full of small independent shops selling locally made crafts and quality artisan produce.
We encourage you to support these local businesses by purchasing their goods to enjoy yourself or to take home as gifts. You'll find all sorts, from traditional bara brith and welsh cakes to satisfy your sweet tooth, to locally distilled gin and handmade pottery for gifts that have a better chance of lasting long enough to take back home!
Trearrdur bay is blessed with a some independently owned cafes and eateries too, offering delicious meals and snacks. Not to mention the pubs with their locally brewed ales. These small business all work together to support each other, creating a thriving community of artisan producers and retailers.
