Description of Walking short break in Lake Como, Italy
This trip can be tailor made throughout the year to suit your requirements
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.
PlanetThe path we walk on was restored in 1989 by local associations aiming at promoting responsible tourism in the area. In fact, it offers tourists and walking lovers the chance to enjoy some peaceful hours deep in stillness as well as wonderful views on Lake Como and the surrounding mountains far away from the busy roads running along the lake, thus helping reduce pollution. That’s why we would like to give great attention to the respect of the environment thus living it fully. We suggest tourist walking along this path to take an aluminum bottle instead of plastic bottles as along the trail they will find lots of sources where to refill bottles with fresh and pure water.
Moreover, they will have the chance to taste local products and to get to know local people along the way, which will encourage local economy. One of our aims in fact is to encourage economy of people working far from the beaten tourist tracks, people working in the countryside. Here, you will find, olive groves, pollinator gardens where beehives can be found, olive mills.
Family-stay accommodations and crottos have been selected because of their environment-friendly attitude: use of local and seasonally grown food in private gardens, private and passionate cooks opening their houses to people interested in getting to know traditions and secrets of local cuisine handed down through nannies cookbooks, attention to the reduction of plastic usage.
And you will have the chance to take home a bit of Italy!
PeopleThis tour aims at contributing to the economy of small farmers and people living out of the tourist tracks. Varenna, together with Bellagio on the opposite shore of the lake, on the spot where the lake divides into two different branches, is considered to be one of the pearls of Lake Como and is overcrowded with tourists most of the year. This walking tour will allow you to enjoy the quiet of the area on the foot of the Grigna mountain chain and to meet people working in the countryside. This area, in fact, enjoys a favourable microclimate allowing olive trees to be grown; many pollinator gardens have been grown to produce honey.
You will enjoy traditional cuisine cooked with local food from fish to cheese in a typical Crotto, a place where culture and history of local food are preserved. The “crotto” was originally a natural cave used to kept and age food; nowadays, these caves have been turned into traditional restaurants where meals are prepared using local products such as cold cuts, cheese from the neighboring alpine pastures, salad from the garden.
Moreover, you will meet people living in the cosy hamlets which have been restored in the last few years trying to call back young people. Not to miss a typical dinner experience in a private house where a local and passionate cook will let you taste typical cuisine from the Lario, visit and tastings in a farmhouse in the countryside, stop in a olive oil shop gathering the products of all producers in the area, where you will have the chance to buy and take home a bit of Lario flavors and scents helping the economy area far from the world-wide known villages to survive and traditions to be alive.
