Carbon reduction

Your vacation will help support local people and conservation. We must also reduce CO2. Learn about the CO2 emissions of this vacation and how to reduce them.

Environment

As much as it is a spiritual journey for some, for many walking the Camino Francés is all about connecting with the ever-changing landscapes through which you pass and interacting with local communities as you go from village to village. That can only happen if we continue to look after the pathways and thoughtfully engage with each place.

For the visitor, there are many basic things you can do, by no means exclusive to the Camino, such as bringing a refillable water bottle and choosing locally-run restaurants where you do not have meals included.

There are always ways that we, the tour operator can help. For example some of the hotels along the route help to protect the historical heritage of their regions. On the first night you sleep in a converted medieval hospital, part of the monastery. Later on you'll rest your head in a former 16th century watermill.

In La Rioja we introduce guests to a boutique vineyard that takes an environmentally-friendly and low impact approach to its wine growing techniques.

Community

A key component of this trip is that you get to interact with different communities along the length of the Camino Francés, starting near the French border in the Basque region, then on through La Rioja, Castile and into Galicia.

For a trip of this length, it is much more common to concentrate your travels into the final 100km stretch from Sarria to Santiago in Galicia. One in four people do this. We take great pride in introducing you to the different cultures and communities across the considerable width of Northern Spain.

Throughout the trip we work directly with local drivers to transport you to the starting point of each walk and then on to your next hotel at the end of the day. Whilst you are walking they also take your luggage on to the next lodge. Outside of the cities you stay in small family-run guesthouses, again with whom we work directly, rather than through an agency or middle man.
