Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.
Planet
Given most of the time is spent exploring on foot, the trip itself is low carbon. it is important that our staff, local partners and customers are aware of the delicate balance which exists in the places we visit, and leave no trace. It is safe to drink the water from the tap in England. For customers keen to avoid buying single use plastic bottles, we encourage them to take advantage of our discounted filter Water-To-Go bottle which removes over 99.9% of all microbiological contaminants in water. These are available at the country house used on this trip. Alternatively they are able to bring their own reusable water bottle and fill this up at the house.
We operate a ‘leave no trace’ policy on tour; our tour leaders are trained to promote this message. As the focus of this trip is primarily walking, we aim to leave a minimal impact on the areas as possible. This includes not deviating from designated walking areas so as not to upset ecosystems irrespective of the size. We encourage customers not to feed wildlife including birds and red squirrels as they become reliant on tourists. The country house is careful to separate waste for recycling.
We are committed to offering low impact vacations that benefit the country and communities we visit. This trip is primarily spent on foot walking, in a more remote areas of the Lake District.
People
We stay in a country house on the shores of Buttermere in the Lake District. Customers make their own way to the start of the tour; we give clear instructions on reaching the house using public transport. All meals are provided at the house using a combination of locally sourced food and whole foods. On Tuesday evenings dinner is taken at a local restaurant helping to support local businesses.
We have financially supported the rebuilding of bridges washed away and walking paths that have fallen into disrepair, this ensures paths are maintained for years to come.
Every Tuesday the Cumbrian Mountain Rescue team visit the country house to give a talk about what they do and sell items for support. As a business, we support this company financially on an annual basis.
We cap customers at a maximum of 21 so as not to impact the environment surrounding Buttermere. We employ the services of local outfitter to transport us to and from hiking trail heads.
