Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your vacation will help support conservation and local people.

Environment
Cuba and Central America is home to some of the most rugged natural beauty and magnificent colonial architecture on the planet, meaning that we consider efforts to help maintain this beautiful region to be absolutely imperative. Our tour leaders are always Spanish-speaking experts on the countries that they operate in and as such are passionate about helping maintain the sights and character for which the region has gained international renown. When visiting the historic sights of Central America, such as the colonial streets of Havana or the ancient site of Tikal in Guatemala, our tour leaders reinforce our beliefs regarding their strict preservation. When staying in cities, we book accommodation as close to each respective cityís greatest attractions, negating the requirement to use transport when seeing the sights, in turn helping to cut down on emissions.

We are committed to the protection and conservation of all animals, both wild and domesticated. Therefore when visiting natural attractions such as the crystal clear waters of Caye Caulker in Belize every precaution is taken to protect the habitats of the wildlife that resides there. Travelers that opt to snorkel or dive here will be asked to follow simple procedures put in place to help with the preservation of such environments. In addition to this our hotel in San Ignacio houses a large watering hole that they maintain to aid in the well being and attraction of local wildlife in the area. There are over 63 species of bird documented in the area as well as iguanas and other marine life.

We strongly believe in reducing our effect on the environment in every possible way. Littering is absolutely prohibited, as is any activity that may prove detrimental to the sites or their surrounding environments. One of our primary initiatives is reducing, reusing and recycling waste at any given opportunity. Appropriate waste disposal is something that we insist on during our tours. Guides will advise on how best to reuse and recycle appropriately in each country. Our tour leaders appreciate that facilities such as recycling may not always be readily available but do ask that any recyclable waste is kept on your person before disposing of it in the correct manner.

Energy conservation is another cause that we promote during our tours, with a focus on keeping electricals off whenever there is no need for them to be on. Customers are asked to adhere to responsible practices in all accommodation and avoid using energy if itís not necessary. We encourage customers to take short showers and to be aware of their water usage, especially in the Casa Particulares in Cuba.

Community

The Impacts of this Trip

Throughout the Cuba leg of the tour accommodation consists of a collection of casas particulares, much like a local B&B or homestay. Due to the nature of these establishments, typically run by families, it is an excellent way of supporting local Cuban communities. Not only that but the experience offers a brilliant opportunity to see how Cubans live their day to day lives. All of our guides are local to the region in which the tour is being held, meaning an excellent insight into local cultures as well as extra funds for the regionís economy.

Due to our tour guidesí insider knowledge, they are able to give valuable advice as to where is best to eat, shop and explore locally. This means a more authentic experience for those traveling with us but also leads to a greater flow of funds into the communities that need it most. In addition to this, all our tour leaders in Cuba and mainland Central America are Spanish speaking. This means conversations between suppliers and ourselves is more streamlined, ensuring the tour runs as smooth as possible. It also means that tour leaders can assist with booking local excursions and activities that customers may otherwise avoid due to the language barrier.

Our tour leaders are experts in the region they work in and will always provide information on the best local places to get authentic food with a welcoming service. In addition to this, tour leaders will point out local markets and artisan shops where customers can purchase souvenirs that have been made within the country and thus supporting the local economy.

On this tour, breakfasts are the only meal that is included in the accommodation. Most meals and dinners are at the customer's own cost which offers them the ultimate flexibility and choice to ensure they are choosing local produce and supporting small restaurants and businesses.
