Responsible tourism
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your vacation will help support conservation and local people.

In camps guests are all issued with reusable water bottles to reduce plastic consumption. Water is purified and distributed accordingly. $10 is donated to fund the operations of a Foundation to be utilized 100% on foundation and conservation projects within the communities around the camps The properties are completely solar-powered and 80% of the water used in camp is recycled. Kanga Camp is 100% green. Thorntree River Lodge is an eco-conscious haven.
We care about Africa – for each trip that is booked 1% of the booking fee will be donated to the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre near Kruger National Park in South Africa.
Anti-Poaching
By land or lake, the Bumi Hills Anti-Poaching Units is committed to protecting the wildlife and wilderness of this ecologically important region. From coordinated patrol efforts to the collection of wildlife crime data, vigilance is key to our continued success.
Wildlife Research
For long-term conservation initiatives to succeed, there is a need for more meaningful research to be conducted in the Sebungwe region of Zimbabwe. The Bumi Hills Foundation strives to fill this gap through studies of local predators, large mammals, and environmental ecology in the years to come.
The Impacts of this Trip
By directly linking these benefits to tourism these communities learn to positively value wildlife and nature as resources for improving their well-being. Visits to projects can be arranged, depending on activities underway at the time.

Community-Conservation Related Activities while at Somalisa:
There are programs focusing on education, conservation, and community infrastructure and community empowerment. Visits to projects can be arranged, depending on activities underway at the time. Visiting these projects would constitute a one full day visit (not on a Saturday or Sunday) from Somalisa Camp. A typical programme for a day would look like this:
Morning: visit the Umtshibi Camp and meet the Foundation Projects Coordinator.
Then tour the Mambanje Cattle Boma Project which helps mitigate conflict between humans and lions, monitor lion trends and patterns, provide early warning systems, and prevent lion hunting.
Stop for packed lunch from Somalisa Camp.
Continue to the Vukani Bead Making Project. This is a beading and jewelry-making project. The group uses their earnings to take care of orphans as well as cover other living needs.
Then visit the Thandanani Sewing project. Due to economic hardship all group members are struggling to earn a living hence the eagerness to grab the opportunity to sew to earn a living.
Community-Conservation Related Activities while at Thorntree:
Community Visit (half day activity): Assist the local Maunga Village with general support. The visit to this community may also include a visit to the local carpenter blacksmith, to witness his trade and see his creations.
