Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your vacation will help support conservation and local people.

Environment
We are very conscious of avoiding mass tourism and the issues associated with it. Given that this tour allows for a maximum of 19 people, with an average of 10 travelers per group, we can ensure that access to locally run businesses is possible for all who travel with us. This applies to hotels, eateries and markets, making sure that we can support the local economy in a variety of manners, in turn helping to improve the quality of life for the communities in question.

We always insist upon particular consideration from those traveling with us when it comes to water and electricity consumption during our tours. Lights and other electrical appliances should never be left on when not in use, nor should unnecessary quantities of water be used. For example, we discourage our travelers to have baths when on our tours, suggesting that people should shower in the interest of the environment. All of our tour leaders have an in depth knowledge of the region in question and can help in advising what practices should be undertaken in order to benefit the environment when in Vietnam.

Our tour leaders avidly encourage that all who travel with us reduce, recycle and reuse waste wherever possible. When recycling facilities aren’t available, simply keep hold of your litter and ask your tour leader to point out the nearest recycling station. We also promote refilling your water bottles wherever possible and request that the purchase of one use plastic bottles be kept to a minimum, given the detrimental effect that they have on the environment - not just locally but globally.

It is imperative that none of our guests litter at any stage during our tours. This is something that our tour leaders enforce during the tour. We will be visiting sites of rare natural beauty and rich cultural significance, such as the natural marvel of Halong Bay or the colourful streets of Hoi An. To litter in such locations is not only detrimental to the environment but also utterly disrespectful to the communities that reside or work there.

Our London-based UK office also follows an environmentally friendly code of conduct. Water and electricity wastage is kept to a minimum, we recycle wherever possible and paper is only ever used when strictly necessary.

Animal tourism - Unfortunately the standard of animal care and the level of exploitation of animals in Asia is much higher than other places in the world. We are fundamentally against any form of animal exploitation for human entertainment and strongly advise our customers to avoid zoos or any animal park that allows riding on wild animals.
Community

The Impacts of this Trip

Throughout all of our tours we use local accommodation and our tour leaders always advise that those traveling with us eat meals and buy souvenirs from authentic local vendors, as opposed to larger chains. Not only does this lend a helping hand to the communities that we stay with but also provides a more genuine experience of Vietnam as a whole. While in Hanoi, our tour leaders encourage our customers to eat at Koto Restaurant - an establishment which trains disadvantaged youth and aim to end the cycle of poverty. We also support a similar organisation in Hoi An - the Blue Dragon Restaurant. The restaurant is staffed by ex-street children and the owner works towards education, health and food programs for street children and orphans in the area.

Our tour leaders are all extremely familiar with the local ways of life and frequently communicate with locals, meaning that they can help travelers find the hidden spots known only to those familiar with the area and encourage better interaction between travelers and the people that they meet during their journey. Tour leaders’ knowledge of the customs and culture also helps those traveling with us to adhere to these customs, avoiding any potentially disrespectful or offensive behaviour.

Traveling with Respect – On our website’s responsible travel pages we provide a list of tips on creating good relationships between our travelers and the local communities that we visit on our tours. For example, for this tour we would recommend that clients learn a few words of the local language to try and engage with vendors, and we would advise researching the history, religion and local traditions of Vietnam to help them appreciate the architecture and culture of those countries and thereby get the most from their trip while respecting local customs.
