Responsible tourism: Lofoten Islands whale watching & fishing vacation, Norway

Each visitor receives details of how to respect the local environment and communities in the Lofoten Islands. We encourage guests to cycle and walk on the islands and include advice about walking routes and fragile ecosystems and bird colonies that exist there.

We work with a company which provides safe and respectful whale watching activities to ensure that the creatures aren’t harmed in any way. The guides at the Whale Centre and onboard the vessels are scientists and students who ensure that the whales are not disturbed and continue to have a sustainable future in the Atlantic.

We encourage guests to try local flavours, and of course catch their own dinner by going to sea with a fisherman. This helps to support the local industry and reduce food miles. It’s also a real pleasure to eat fish that are caught in small quantities direct from the sea.

The Rorbus are all highly insulated and consume very little energy. There are wood burning stoves to encourage the use of renewable forms of fuel / energy. Our company also has a rigorous environmental policy with our offices being based in a building that has won awards for its sustainability. For example, heat exchangers submerged in a nearby manmade lake reject or absorb the embodied energy stored within the water; this energy is then routed to a series of heat pumps which provide heating and cooling to air handling units within the building, thereby replacing the need for conventional gas-fired boilers and air-cooled chillers.

You’ll be staying in a locally owned Rorbu - or traditional fisherman’s cabin. You’ll get to know how the Lofoten community relies on its important fishing industry and support local people by taking part in trips at sea. You’ll get to know about the journey from sea to plate for the fish industry, as it supports both visitors and inhabitants alike. We only work with local guides for each of the activities offered and ensure that they receive a far deal for the services they offer.
