As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.
Walking has minimal impact on the environment as you provide most of the energy yourself and, when you’re walking from village to village, you can enjoy a relationship with locals in a way motorists passing through never can. Also, by walking independently, and not having to worry about keeping up with a group, you set the pace so you can soak up the sights, sounds and scents of your surrounds and really get under the skin of the place you’re visiting.
We proactively encourage our clients to think about traveling responsibly too: packing light, saving water, buying locally, re-cycling all maps and route notes at the end of their trip as well as to be mindful of not leaving any rubbish behind.
We are well aware of the impact tourism has at home and abroad, and we make every effort to balance the environmental impact of traveling with the immense benefits sustainable tourism can bring to destinations and the people who live there. So we start in the office: we turn off all electrical equipment every night; we use energy-efficient bulbs; we measure print and paper consumption, and re-cycle wherever possible; we print our brochures on paper from sustainable sources, and send them out in bio-degradable packaging.
PeopleLeaders & local suppliers:
On this self-guided 10-night walking vacation, you explore the timeless countryside between picturesque Volterra and the soaring towers of San Gimignano. You'll feel as though you're strolling through history as you discover sleepy hilltop hamlets crowning sun-dappled hills, verdant vineyards and panoramic picnic spots in fields ablaze with sunflowers. You get off the beaten track, and you’ll find that people treat you as a visitor rather than a tourist. There's the option too to visit the eternal cities of Siena and Florence - Tuscan favourites right on your doorstep! Our carefully picked hotels, all with pools, are full of contrasts. From a recently renovated, elegant boutique hotel just outside the medieval town of Casole d'Elsa to the refined elegance of the 4 star Relais della Rovere in Colle di Val d'Elsa, a magnificently restored 12th century abbey where you spend four nights, and which is an excellent base for day trips to the eternal cities of Siena and Florence. Chianti is synonymous with excellent food and wine and evening meals are a celebration of the local cuisine. Perhaps try pappardelle alla lepre (fresh ribbons of pasta with a hare sauce) or bruschetta (toasted bread rubbed with garlic and olive oil, topped with sun ripened tomatoes), all washed down by a glass or two of full-bodied Chianti! As with all our vacations, we encourage visitors to buy from independently-run shops & establishments where possible, supporting the local people and their families.
