Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Sami people winter vacation in Norway with ice hotel

The Sami experience involves sleeping in Lavvu tents and using dog sleds to travel up onto the mountain plateau. As you are taking part in the lives of the Sami, you are naturally going to be part of an environmentally sensitive experience. The Sami respect their environment and take only what they need and leave behind no sign of their visit. In itself, it is a lesson in how to treat the environment.

The Hotels we use are selected by their policies and they operate local food sourcing, local employment and good recycling and waste management. Our travelers will receive a Responsible Traveler Charter or Code of Conduct within their trip pack.

This experience involves us working with a Sami company based in Maze in Northern Norway, which is the world's purest Sami village where every one of the 350 inhabitants is Sami, apart from just one family. Our Sami guides are Elen Inga and Tore Turi deliver the Sami experience and therefore benefit directly and entirely from visitors buying this element of the programme.

These experiences are designed to offer greater cross cultural understanding between the local culture and the visitor, by promoting genuine contact within an enjoyable vacation experience. We are working with our local partner to deliver a unique set of enjoyable and inspiring cultural insights for the visitor. We hope you will come home refreshed, inspired and with memories and a greater understanding of another culture that may even have an influence on your way of living back home.

This experience is an insight into the life of the Sami people in Winter. The programme allows you to meet these people with a guide and spend time with them enjoying the landscape, taking part in traditional activities and getting to understand their ways and beliefs just by being with them and talking around a fire or on the trip.

We put people at the heart of our programmes. Those are the people who belong to the fascinating cultures that exist around the World. They will be your hosts, either as your guides or as people that you will spend time with. We believe you will come home inspired and refreshed from the experience. We developed these programmes because we felt that contact with the local people existed within tour itineraries either as some short-lived add-on or as a cosmetic showcase of our own perception of their way of life. We wanted to bring the local people to the core of the vacation and to allow them to welcome and host you during your visit. We have not identified a local charity to support yet so we will donate a proportion of the income we receive to an International charity of choice, which at this time is Wateraid.

5 out of 5 stars

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

As we came out of the woodland and onto the frozen lake, the thrill of running a team of 8 huskies gave way to awe at the sheer magical beauty of the landscape. The trees were heavy with snow, everything was white, touched by the light of the low sun. I have never felt so alive.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Don't skimp on the layers!
Although the Sami guides don't expect tips, we took some of our own produce (honey) to give as a thank you gift. This went down extremely well!
Norway is expensive.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

We were looked after really well by the local partners, the bus drivers, the staff at Englholm Husky, and also by our Sami guide. We stayed in cabins made of local materials, and shopped locally. We got lots of good advice about avoiding tourist traps, for instance I bought a traditional Sami knife direct from the knife smith in Karasjok, after Mr Engholm told us where to go.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

This was quite simply the best, most intense vacation I've ever had.
