PlanetMount Nelson recycles, makes organic compost, uses spring water to irrigate the estate. It is the first luxury hotel in South Africa to practice vermiculture. This is a worm farm which manages the disposal of much of the hotel's organic waste. They have removed all plastic straws from the property. Cooking oil is sent to a recycling facility. All herbs are sourced from a neighbouring organic farm. The hotel uses energy-saving heat pumps to heat hot water for the rooms.
Belmond Eagle Island is among the most environmentally friendly lodges in the country. It was rebuilt in 2015 and redesigned to follow sustainability principles. Their green credentials are impressive and even the air-conditioning runs off solar. It has completely changed the way it operates since the rebuilt. Water is drawn from the Delta and filtered, so it is fine for showering and bathing. It now has the lightest environmental footprint and a design that is aligned with the Okavango Management Plan, requiring no permanent structures. Completely on solar energy, pumping water from the Kavango River during high water periods and from a borehole in times of low water,. It is now 95% eco-friendly and a leading example for many other African camps.
PeopleAt Belmond Eagle Island you can visit the local village community. The rooves were built with local thatching grass from communities in Northern Botswana. The renovation process was seen by Eagle Island Lodge as a chance to provide employment opportunities for the local community.
Mount Nelson gives back to the community and has a commitment to educating its staff to make a difference in the lives of others. The Chef busy organic vegetables from township community farmers thus supporting local entrepreneurs. Financially supported the creation of the Cape Indigenous Wild Food Garden at the Ikhaya Garden in 2016. The hotel also supports 3 organisations in Cape Town - The Cape Town Opera, Red Cross Children's Hospital and St. Luke's Hospice.
