As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.
PlanetFestivals express the very soul of a community, rooted as they are in local history and folklore. They’ll engage all your senses, with their din, colours, scents, tastes – the sheer rawness and spontaneity of the whole experience. This is a fabulous way to learn about the local customs and traditions and get an authentic view of the country you are traveling to in an unpackaged way.
The landscape is what makes your experience, and through encouragement and multiple opportunities from our leaders to refill your reusable bottle, this can be preserved. Our local leaders encourage refilling and reusing bottles from the safe water heaters in the hotels to discourage buying of single-use plastic water bottles, which are also actively not distributed.
All the hotels we stay in are locally owned and run, thus providing much needed income for the communities, often remote, that we visit on this trip. In addition we spend two nights in a homestay in one of the villages. This is a very low impact way to overnight, with a lower carbon footprint than a hotel. The family provides our food which is sourced from the local market - produce invariably grown nearby so it has minimal travel miles before reaching our plates.
As a travel company we are continually looking for ways to improve and are proud to be ‘Responsible in everything we do’. Education is key, and so all staff, Tour Leaders and partnering suppliers are trained in responsible and sustainable tourism. At our Head Office, we continually strive towards a sustainable and planet-friendly working environment, including having solar panels installed and a company commitment to reducing our plastic usage.
PeopleHaving meals in locally-owned and run restaurants not only provides you with a chance to enjoy true traditional Chinese cuisine and hospitality, but it also means your money supports the local community and ensures they have a continued livelihood. This is especially important in the more rural areas we visit, this tour focuses on visiting some of the more remote parts of Southern China which really enables you to experience a non commercialised part of Chinese society.
A way we support local artisans is through the visits to the Miao Nationality Villages in the most rural areas. Here, you can buy local homemade handicrafts which means the locals can continue to live in their traditional ways.
As a company we have valuable and longstanding partnerships with UK charities Toilet Twinning and Send a Cow, plus many smaller initiatives and projects around the world. We’re members of the UK travel industry body AITO because we believe it’s important to share our knowledge and experience, as well as learn from other operators.
