As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.
PlanetWith its rolling hills, still lakes and vibrant picturesque villages the Lake District is a magical place and we believe that helping to preserve its beauty is almost our duty. Therefore, our Lake District retreat is designed in a way to really cut our carbon footprint to a minimum.
On this trip you will only unpack once. This is already a bonus (who likes packing?) but it means a lot in terms of carbon footprint. By staying in a single, centrally-based location in Keswick we consciously choose not to travel from one place to the other and thus cut down on transfers, meaning we cut the carbon emissions too.
The main inclusion on this trip is cycling, the ultimate environmentally responsible form of transportation. And – after a careful assessment of the safety aspects – we’ve taken it a bit further and opted not to include a support vehicle. While these are nice to have as a backup they are rarely utilised on a trip with short cycling legs such as this and we’d prefer to help save the environment. And don’t worry, we will still always have access to transport in an emergency situation when it is needed.
Staying in one, center-based location also means we can help reduce excess linen changes and bathroom consumables, small items by themselves but cumulatively a significant contributor to water wastage and excess rubbish.
We made sure that food we will consume is locally sourced. This means we not only eat from local producers, supporting their hard work. It also cuts down so called food miles. Think about all these imported food produce and how much emissions they generate.
We have also chosen to keep the majority of the activities outside of cycling as optional. That way you see and experience only what specifically interests you – as well as keeping your costs low it means your environmental footprint will be lower as you don’t waste resources visiting something you otherwise wouldn’t.
Altogether, while we do consciously keep our carbon emission to a minimum, we still generate some. This is unavoidable. We off set all those emissions by investing in many green energy projects across the world. This is why we call ourselves responsible.
PeopleIt is in our genes to support local communities wherever we travel too, and it is no different even if we travel close to home.
It is important to mention the size of our groups. We travel with maximum 12 people (8-9 on average). For the locals residents in Lake District this, in our opinion, is a way to show respect. This beautiful countryside should not be flooded with masses of people - by keeping our group sizes small we aim to find a balance between preserving the environment while bringing welcome economic benefits to the region.
In addition, smaller group size allows us to support local, family or community run businesses otherwise inaccessible for (or perhaps worse still, overrun by) coach tours.
We have been careful to select local partners that share our passion for sustainability and community values. On this trip we’re proud to pay a visit to the Keswick Brewery, a locally owned and operated eco-friendly business that takes pride in returning part of its profits to community causes. Rather than using our own fleet of bikes we have chosen to also source these locally, helping keep the financial benefits in the hands of locals.
We are also careful to encourage our travelers to dine at truly local establishments. Be it a well-earned beer at the Keswick Brewery, the sublime cheese scones at Mrs F’s Fine Food Emporium, or visiting direct producers, we help locals to run and develop their business. This is our commitment our own values, to the local community, and to you.
