Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.

Planet

Our Harris and Lewis photography vacation is essentially slow, small group travel and groups are capped at 10 guests. Whenever possible these small groups will explore our locations is by foot helping to reduce pollution, environmental noise and damage. Our guides encourage a photographic approach which encompasses a quiet contemplation of the landscape and to be careful not to leave traces or intrude in any way on other people’s life and activities. The quality of the natural environment in Harris and Lewis is unique. Much of our time we will be photographing on the shorelines where large percentage of areas of inland water, salt flats and marine sites are designated for nature conservation purposes. We ensure that our guests are fully aware of the implications of photographing in these areas and to travel responsibly by adherence to our environmental ethos and guidelines:

• To walk wherever possible. Our family run hotel is very central to our locations allowing us to keep driving to a minimum.

• To keep erosion to a minimum by using footpaths or rights of way and to avoid stepping on, or picking native flora.

• To minimise minimise human disruption of the natural environment. Much of our time we will be photographing on the shorelines of Harris & Lewis. We ensure that our guests are aware that these islands are also home the golden eagle, basking shark, whale, dolphin, otter and corncrake.

• To take time to carry out some research about Harris & Lewis and their unique environment and history.

• To avoid plastic waste a metal or heavy-duty plastic bottle such as Nalgene to refill with water from a safe source is recommended to all of our guests.

• To respect local customs, traditions and personal property boundaries.

• To send copies of photographs to local people if this is what you have said you will do.

• Read the labels and buy local products such as food and souvenirs so that money directly benefits the community.

• To reduce pollution and carry out all litter and recycle wherever possible. This is especially important on Harris and Lewis as they have limited facilities to process waste and recycle.

Wherever possible we work electronically and promote considerate use of digital resources. We are primarily web based for all administrative communications with minimal use of office paper. Participants will be encouraged to use local ferries for transport to and from the islands.

People

Our photographic tutors are happy to work with local community groups supporting their promotional work through the provision of free, high quality photographs.

The money spent on this trip on accommodation, transport, catering and personal purchases, also benefits directly the local community and supports the fragile island economies.

On both Harris and Lewis tourism is an important source of income our tours visit places that are less frequented by tourists, avoiding the creation of “honey-pots” that can damage the environment and erode community heritage.

This Harris & Lewis Vacation visits the isles during low season when visitor numbers are lower and our economic contribution is especially welcome.

We collaborate closely with local businesses and partners who have been carefully selected for their shared respect for our own sustainable ethos and environmental values.

Our accommodation is provided by a small, family-run hotel which is very close to our locations.

All food items for the vacation will be purchased on the island rather than brought from the mainland, menus will include local produce.
