Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.

We know the wildlife of the Buri Peninsula intimately and are committed to protecting and conserving it. Whilst the African wild ass is a key focus for this tour, we are determined to ensure that all elements of the ecosystem are protected. In particular our visit will allow us to record species in an area that has not been systematically surveyed, allowing for a deeper understanding of the importance of this ecosystem. Caracal, striped hyena, pale fox and rueppell's fox are all likely to occur in the areas visited by this tour, and confirming their presence will only cement the value of the ecosystem in the Buri Peninsula. Our visit ensures that local people see the value in preserving all populations of wildlife, as we bring inward investment to the local community.

We are conscious that in areas visited by this tour fresh water is a scarce resource. As such, we ask all clients to be mindful of their water usage on this tour. Our accommodation in the Buri Peninsula is basic and only small amounts of water will be provided to clients for washing. Water will be re-used wherever possible.

It is key to our mission to ensure that local communities see the benefit of ecotourism, especially in little-visited areas of Africa. As such, we insist that our local partners employ people from the areas we visit. In the Buri Peninsula, our guides, cooks and porters are all Eritrean. This is also the case for all staff at our accommodation in Massawa and Asmara.

We highly recommend that clients take the opportunity to visit local markets and purchase goods from local shops in both Asmara and Massawa. Asmara is famed for its food, particularly due to its Arabic and Italian influences, and there are therefore many excellent cafes and restaurants in the city - we recommend spending money in many of these, as Eritrean hospitality is famously warm.

It is vitally important that we build strong relationships between ecotourists and local communities, and it is imperative that all guests respect local cultures and traditions. We ask all clients to dress modestly throughout their stay. We also provide all clients with some basic phrases in Tigrinya to help deepen their enjoyment of the tour and the ability of the group to bond with local people. We also ask clients to refrain from taking photographs of local people without their permission.
